Eastern Road Trip!

Fellas, I'm looking for route suggestions for a big trip I am planning. This trip comes at a perfect time as I am going to be changing jobs and for the first time in my life, I can take 10 days off and not worry about phone calls or emails because I will be technically unemployed until my return!

I'll be departing from San Antonio, Tx and the details that are known for sure at the moment are the following:

Dates: July 2 - July 10
Mandatory stop: July 8-9 @ South Bend Indiana for my sister's graduation

I have a general idea of roads to ride and places I want to see during this trip. Obviously I am taking the long way towards South Bend

I am interested in heading east to deals gap, ride the dragon, the blue ridge parkway, and cherahola. Some of the places I'd like to visit along the way are Gettysburg and Niagara Falls. Other than this, I have no actual plan but I am curious to know if there are any "must ride" roads or other places that beg you to stop at. At the same time, I am going to be camping along the way so being in close proximity to a hotel is not necessary and if there are any suggestions on great camping areas I'd be very interested.

I will be leaving south bend in the wee hours of July 10th (2am or so) since I would like to ride straight to San Antonio that day. High mileage days dont worry me at all.

Any advice is much appreciated!

I'd skip Niagara. At least avoid being there on the weekend. Since you're hitting deals gap, the dragon, blue ridge, etc., I'd spend more time in that general area. Great camping and riding. I had a blast down in WV at the Romney event this spring.

What he said. Several years ago we rode to Niagara Falls. Everyone said to stay on the Canadian side for the light show at night. It consisted of a white spotlight for 3 minutes, then it switched to red, then blue after 3 minutes. Not what I would call a light show. JMHO.

Lots of great riding and interesting places to see in West Virginia. Maybe you will find ideas on my website: www.RidingWV.com

Be advised - the southern half of the state has experienced severe flooding in the past week. Most major roads may be passable, but there are several that have been washed out completely. Also, there may be limited accommodations (hotels/dining) for awhile. Prayers for all those families.

My wife and I stopped by Niagara Falls last fall (no pun intended) and had a good time visiting the falls and the big Seneca Niagara casino. We won enough on the nickel slots to pay for our (excellent) buffet lunches.

If your doing the BRP from the dragon and cherohola skyway area, might as well do skyline drive to Rt 15 to Gettysburg. Heading back west from Gettysburg you could come back to the great state of WV or you could ride Lincoln's highway RT 30 from Chambersburg/Shippensburg area. Then skirt Lake Erie or head south towards mid/central Ohio for those twistes. BIg B could turn you on to some good roads in Ohio.

What kind of things do you like? Beer? Nude resorts? Twisties? Waterfalls? Historic stuff? There's so much to see.

Wheels of Time museum in Maggie Valley.

441 over the Smokies has a loop, a full 360, Clingman's Dome at the top is great.

BRP Mt. Michell, Linville Gorge hike a must. Little Switzerland has an airbnb walk to the bar.

If you liked Last of the Mohicans movie, then the cliff walk at Chimney Rock near Ashville.

BMW factory in SC near Spartansburg.

Charlottesville, VA has the historic stick up the ass university and Jefferson's Montecello

If you like battles, a VA trip can hit Fredericksburg (remember the Irish Brigade), Manassas (well worth it), Sharpsburg (best to see land and action interact), and Gettysburg is stunning.

To the south, Helen, GA is beer land and is right on the six gaps route
