Big Bend National Park
Rode the Strom to Big Bend National park and stayed two nights at the Chisos Basin campground. A little over 400 miles along highway 90 each way including the 70 miles from Marathon to the site. A relatively fast road with several stretches of 70 and 75 mph. This campgrounds location is its claim to fame and I was not disappointed, but due to the lack of space the sites are closely spaced with little privacy. I was also surprised by the number of campers for a Sunday. If I return I will look for site on the upper loop with a shelter and wooden picnic table.
I planned on taking the FJR, but the rear tire was wearing thin in a small area hence the 650 with new tires. I was surprised at the cold and used my recently installed heated grips a lot, but it was a cool ride both ways. I need to come up with a throttle lock that works.
In spite of its remoteness there is a lodge and restaurant
close by that I hiked to for their breakfast buffet. Otherwise you have to bring your own food or drive to marathon and take your chances there.
I have photos but can't figure out how to paste with tablet. Maybe later.
