Miles today: 384
Time on road: 8 hours

Woodstock, GA to Foley, AL

Two lane from Woodstock to Helfin, AL.

Hwy 9 into Montgomery, AL

Small town Alabama

From Montgomery it was slab most of the way down to Foley.

Took a short ride down to the beach in Gulf Shores. Last time that I was here, many years ago, I could actually see the ocean while driving on the road.

Will be spending the night with my uncle. We meet an aunt and two of my cousins that I had not seen for around 56 years. Dinner at the Shrimp Bucket and after getting reacquainted we called it a night.

Bad picture, but from left to right, my uncle Arlie, cousin Cheryl, aunt Dottie, cousin Jeneal, and me.

Miles today: 595
Total miles: 979
Time on road: 10 hours 45 minutes

Foley, AL to Brookshire, TX

Day started out at 77F. Headed north out of Foley on Hwy 59 to I-10. Took a left and that would be the route for the day. All slab and heavy traffic.

Crossed a river ever now and then which helped to break up the monopoly of I-10 in Mississippi.

Made it into Louisiana, temperature was in the mid to upper 90s, and the traffic came to a complete stop. Stop and go for the next 3-4 miles. Mover right along at 3-5 mph.

Crossing the Mississippi River

Another river crossing.

Crossing the Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge

Made it into Texas, still a lot of traffic and getting hotter. Houston was not too bad traffic wise with only one slow down.

Arrived in Brookshire and I had all of the traffic and heat that I need for the day.

Miles today: 361
Total miles: 1,950
Time on road: 7 hours 45 minutes

Van Horn, TX to Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico

Headed NW on I-10 going to El Paso following the Mexican border which was just on my left.

Entering El Paso

Just north of El Paso I left the Interstate and cut over to Hwy 9 in New Mexico. I was heading west while continuing to run parallel to the border on my left. Felt good to get on the back roads again.

Crossed the state line into Arizona and headed SW on Hwy 80.

Reached the border at Douglas / Agua Prieta and crossed with no problem. Took about 30 minutes to get my Tourist Permit and my Vehicle Import permission. Headed to the south side of Agua Prieta, found my hotel, and settled in for the night.

Agua Prieta, Sonora to Hermosillo, Sonora

The last leg of the Rat Ride is from Agua Prieta, Sonora to Hermosillo, Sonora and crosses the Sierra Madre Occidental. This was my route for today. It gave me a chance to see what this section is like. The next time that I am on this road it will be night time, and if the weather pattern continues, probably raining for most of the route.

Mountains, curves, vados, small towns, topes (speed bumps Mexican style), rain, and darkness. What more could anyone want for a bike ride. Well, maybe snow, ice, and cold, but you can't always have everything.

A Vado is a ford. When it is raining or there is water in the stream, the water runs across the road.

Road Porn from today's ride.

Out of the mountains and into the heat and traffic of Hermosillo. Located the hotel and put the bike to bed.

Hermosillo, Sonora

I had planned to get into Hermosillo a day early. This gave me time to organize riding gear, make my final prep for the upcoming ride, and to catch up on my ride report. Just a relaxed day with nothing exciting going on.

"Mexican Desire" is still under her covers and is resting up for her challenge. Erik, her favorite mechanic, will be here later today and tomorrow will give her one last check up and any needed adjustments.

Some of the riders and staff starting arriving late this evening. A few of us got together for a late dinner (that is if you are on eastern time) and then back to our rooms for the night.
