Video of my close call on the Dragon

Just got back from a 4-day trip to Deal's Gap (Tail Of The Dragon). At the far end of the Dragon I took off from the overlook and in less than a minute almost became a hood ornament for a Mini Cooper that was heading the other way. He crossed the double yellow and came within a foot of removing my left leg for me. It happened so fast that I didn't have a chance to get nervous. Listen for the sound of the Mini's tires screeching as we pass each other. Not the red Mini... the green one that is behind it.

I have another video of my run of the Dragon from the CROT up to the overlook that I'll post up here soon. Youtube is still processing that video.

Check the slow motion at Watch youtube in slow motion

The car did not cross the line. Your best lane placement is on the outside of the turn. On a left turn, your best position is on the right side of the lane as you are leaning left. Your tire contact patch can be right of the center line and your head can be left of it.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

Looks like the car stayed on its side of the yellow line to me.

Chalk that one up to a rider hugging the yellow line too much for conditions, and living to tell about it. Learn from it, as the posting of it will hopefully help others to learn as well.

No, you're wrong. The car absolutely did cross the line. The bike I passed in the video had one of my best friends and his wife on it and they saw the whole thing. I even looked back and saw that idiot all over in my lane. The forward-facing video got him just as his tires were reaching the line and you can hear his tires still screeching because he was sliding sideways as he crossed it.

I'm of the opinion that you should probably thank whatever God you pray to that you DID hear that tire screech since in my opinion it was the only thing that saved your life.

Look at your lane placement, about 2 feet off the centerline. Does it not make sense that in a left turn your head is going to be closer to the centerline than your tires?

I'm of the opinion that the tire squeal you heard was the Mini doing it's best to turn RIGHT to keep from taking your head off. After an understandable glance in the mirror to see if you were still upright, the driver realized how quickly he was running out of room on his right and yanked the steering wheel to the left causing him to drift into your lane BEHIND YOU.

It would sure be nice to see a video from the Mini driver's point of view.

Thank you for your concern. Here's a few quick facts for those who are confused:
1 - Sure, I could have been further to the right in my own lane. That would have been safer.
2 - During the entire incident I remained in my lane and was not hanging over the double yellow. If I had been then I would have made physical contact with the Mini as we passed each other.
3 - The Mini driver did NOT stay in his lane.
4 - What saved me was not the screeching of tires, it was that the Mini didn't cross far enough into my lane to make contact with me until after we passed each other. He was in the process of crossing the line at the moment we were passing.
5 - I am lucky the driver did not panic and lose control of his car any more than he did.
6 - If there had been an accident then the driver of the Mini would have been charged, but I'm VERY glad that there was not an accident because I don't want to be "dead right."
7 - I was there. None of you were. I have two witnesses who can back up everything I've said about the incident.
Again, thank you for your concern. I'm fine. The Mini driver is fine. He crossed the line into my lane. I did NOT cross the line into his lane. I could have been farther to the right. He could have stayed in his own F*CKING lane. The End.

Just a couple of comments: (1) Every video of a "near miss" or actual incident posted here will be subjected to scrutiny from every angle from many riders (and we're all experts). If you post a video, don't be surprised when your riding is critiqued. My skin isn't thick enough so you'll never see me post a video (2) That said, my only critique is that:
