I use 1/4" bungee cord. Various lengths and it stays tight. Although, I try to pack stuff in my soft and hard luggage as much as possible...my tent does not fit.

      Here is an example: https://www.amazon.com/Elastic-Bung...s=bungee+cord&qid=1565799352&s=gateway&sr=8-8

I won't use bungee cords with hooks on the end...many people have had some pretty bad eye injuries using this type. And, I can tie a knot.

1/4" bungee cord from your local hardware store. There are plenty of footpegs, indicator brackets, etc to loop it around. I start by making a loop in one end and thread it thought itself around a rear grab handle and go across and back until finding a place to hook the end loop.
As the gear grows or shrinks I just add a new loop in a convenient place, that way the tension is always as you want it.

Perhaps I should try some ROK straps, but I have never had the need for anything better than what I currently use - and its cheap and easily replaceable. Those bungee hooks are damn dangerous, and damaging.
