Thumbs down Bates Boots - You be the judge

I decided last October to get a pair of Bates Boots from Zappos. They were waterproof, reasonably priced and ... seemed like a good value.

I originally got these:

Men - 8" Velocitor Zip Waterproof Boot - Black | Bates Footwear

I liked them a lot - but they failed. Some of the lugs on the sole began to tear off.

I called their support and they were VERY eager to help. I was happy.

I actually found out they had Gore-Tex boots, so asked if I could upgrade - THEY DID! They actually over-upgraded me to a steel to that I didn't want/like - and they were gracious enough to replace them. I appreciated that.

I ended up with these:

Men - GX-8 Side Zip Boot with GORE-TEX® - Black | Bates Footwear

At this point - we are at 3/10 - I know that because I have the email saying "I have received them".

Last week - on 5/6 - I felt something funky. Looked at my boot and a lug was basically ripped off. I took photos and sent them to Bates. I learned 2 things.

1) They do not warranty their warranty replacement boots.
2) "This issue could be caused from wear and tear, the tread on these boots are not designed for motorcycle riding. They suggest our Powersport footwear as these are design for riding."

I wont buy boots from Bates again. You might - I don't know. I will tell you that the sole does accept Shoe Goo very well and I will get more life out of my boots.

It does appear that their powersport boots are waterproof - I wont find out.

Man that sucks, seems many products these days which are not inexpensive.......are quite inferior due to sending all the work outside of America for bottom dollar labor. I suggest you getting a pair of actual motorcycle boots, I have the Alpinestars Web Gor-Tex boots and they are very well made and very much waterproof.

+1 on the Alpinestars Web Gore Tex boots....

Why Motorcycles? Because Golf, Soccer, Football and Baseball only require One Ball

The reason I picked Bates is multi-fold.... but includes:
  • I have 4E feet - they come in wide
  • Zappos does free returns
  • I tried to save a buck
  • They looked socially acceptable.

All of your comments are valid - and when I wear out this pair, I'll head a different route.

That really sucks. And Bates is a major player, owned by Wolverine who also does all the HD and Caterpillar boots.

I took a quick look at their "powersports" boots and was not impressed.

I don't understand the "We dont warranty your warrantied product" policy.

Oh well, lesson learned!

I have Danner Light II's, they are GoreTex, comfortable, and seem durable. Made in America, which is why I opted to spend the extra money. For me, dedicated riding footwear are impractical. I ride to school and work, and don't feel wearing flashy motorcycle footwear is what I want to be doing. I feel my feet are adequately protected while wearing them, even in the event that I go down on the bike.

Brian, have you looked inside the boots to see where they are made? Much of Alpinestars products are now made in China, Romania, and Croatia. I have a pair of Bates and as far as I know they are holding up. May have to go look know though
