2013 Klim Dakar Pants - First Ride

Took my first ride today in my new 2013 Klim Dakar pants.

I wear a 36 / 30 in jeans so I bought the 36 regular from MiniMike at Tellico Motorcycle Outfitters. Mike is one of the best in the business.

It was 42F when I left this morning so I put on thin wicking socks ( Starter brand ), then Nike Pro Combat Hyperwarm base layer ( this is a dri fit type of long pant that has a brushed interior that feels like micro fleece but is not too thick ), then snow boarder wool socks. Over than I wore Fox Titan Sport knee guards. I could feel a little bit of cold through the rear vent and through some of the stretch panels. However, this combination of base layer and the Dakar pant was very comfortable until about 60F. At that point I removed the snow boarder socks and the Nike Pro Combat base layer and opened the vents on the pants. Instant comfort. the leg vents work great, even sitting I could still feel air flowing in the vents.

I have to say that the Dakar pant is by far the most comfortable riding pant I've ever worn. With a windproof outer layer ( rain pant ) I think I could wear these pants below 40F. I also think that I will be able to wear these pants all four seasons.

The cargo pockets on both legs were bigger than I expected. I don't normally use the pockets except to carry my wallet, keys, etc when I stop to eat. Otherwise they stay in the top case. I could easily put my wallet, keys, Spot, and gps in the two leg cargo pockets.

I originally bought d3o armor for the knees and d3o pro xt amor for the hips. the hip pads work great. My only gripe is that the pockets for the hip pads are open at the top ( at the waist ) and do not provide any way of closing ( no velcro ). So, if you hang the pants on a hangar the pads fall out. The knee pads didn't work for me. The knee pad pockets do not allow for any type of adjustment and with the d3o armor installed hand several inches below my knee. The Fox Titan Sport knee guards work perfectly and only set me back $20. I rode for just under 10 hours today and forgot that I had them on. They were that comfortable.

One other thing...inside the waist the word Klim is written repeatedly in silicon so if you tuck in a base layer or jersey, it will likely stay tucked in.

These are keepers.
