WTF

Just got an e-mail from Backroadtoad. He's registered but not posting much here on this forum.

He got rearended on hwy 26 thursday morning in heavy traffic on his way to work.

Soft tissue injuries, will post more if I get more info.

That's me and 2 friends rear ended in the Portland area in less than 6 months.

Oregon has a following distance law that needs to be aggressively enforced. I bet the legislature thought that this law would save lives when it was enacted. Probably after some lawmakers Benz got rearended.

We need more unenforced laws!

Jeez! What's with all the accidents lately!?


No kidding about the following distance law, I can't stand when they have laws and don't enforce them! That 26 tunnel always scares me, it's no passing from before the tunnel heading into portland, and people switch lanes cutting others off just after the tunnel to make the exit. The police were enforcing it one morning years ago, handed out tickets all morning. One after the other, just pointing at people to pull over that were cutting others off.


I avoid 26 in the morning on my way to work. I try to get my butt out the door early to avoid 80% of the extra traffic. It's amazing what a 15 minute window does to traffic. I've been contemplating leaving even earlier, before rush hour even begins.

Man!!! And every time I go out I see people texting behind the wheel. My tail was tapped by a woman in a car with a bunch of screaming children. On that note, I put on some Skene Designs running, brake, turn, modulated LED's and they are blinding. Troy, you mentioned that they were obnoxious to follow so I made some fabric covers to use when I ride with friends so as not to give them epileptic fits. Next time we go for a ride perhaps I could get someone to ride my bike so I could see them in action. Some of the roads in Gifford Pinchot should be getting nice now. Is it poor form, in this thread, for me to ask if anyone wants to go for a ride tomorrow morning?

I don't think I can tomorrow. I've got chores I need to do, and probably visit some family.

It seems that either here or over on ADVRider there is a post several times a month about a rider getting rear ended somewhere. This has made me paranoid to the point that I have decided that I would rather get a ticket for lanesplitting than getting smacked from behind. I usually pull up between the car I was following and the one in the lane next to it and look in my mirrors for someone coming from behind too fast. If they are there and doing so, I pull further between the two cars I am already slightly between. Doing this has saved me from getting hit from behind already once in the past 6 months.

Something to consider...

+1 on this. started doing this recently as well; if i don't pull between the cars i at least get myself pointed in that direction rather than sitting square in the middle of the lane where i feel trapped.

Summer is only beginning, watch out for the left turners.

I usually stop on one side of my lane so I have the ability to move myself between cars if I feel somebody isn't going to stop. I constantly watch my mirrors when stopping and while stopped at a light.
