Thumbs down Greenwater FR Closure Plan

Forest Service

They are floating a plan to close/decommission about 2/3 of the roads in the FR70 network out of Greenwater. They are taking comments until the 28th of this month. Make your voice heard while you can!

If it's anything like Angeles Nat'l Forest, they wanna close all roads to the public. The gov't would prefer you stay home and watch telly.

Money problem. Little logging in Nat'l Forests, so little revenue for the roads that were built for logging trucks. Money diverted for fire fighting. When Our Congress critters sent them money for recreational use of roads, there will be road maintenance...if we live so long.

FR 70/19 Complex

I go out there every summer. There has been no money for road Mx for years and it shows. The run from Greenwater to Stampede Pass on I-90 is great. For years there has been no timber sales in south part of MB-S NF but there has been in the Naches Dist of the O-W NF so they do maintain roads. Decom of roads does not make them disappear nor do they install tank traps, which they do when the "close" a road. Even with maps, GPs, and talk with the rangers at Enumclaw, it's pretty easy to get lost and the NF road number signs are frequently missing or shot up. Logging provided $ for work, Congress provides $ for salaries, benefits and pensions, all of which yeild cash for members of Congress. With the possible exception of the big timber companies lobbying offices in DC, no log has ever lined the pocket of a politician.

Nothing in Angeles Nat'l Forest has been forested in decades. But 50 years ago when I worked for the forest service we had crews maintaining campgrounds ans trails. And we had Hot Shot Crews to fight fires. I did that 3 seasons.
Now the camps are derelict and the camp grounds going fallow. The district headquarters has a shiny new multi million dollar building though. If you are not going to do anything, may as well have comfortable digs to not do it in.

Cynicism aside (and I've got plenty to go around if anyone has a need), the cutoff date for commentary is coming up fast on the 28th. Sent mine in this morning, and received a very reasonable response that left me with the impression all is not lost. If you choose not to send in comments and suggestions, you're simply missing out on an opportunity to change the plan. What's the worst that could happen?

The first pdf link is the scoping letter, and in it is the email address for that method of submission, as well as a snail mail address if desired.
