good riding in the Catskills?

I have been to Lake Placid more than 20 times, but I've never been down to the Catskills. In a few weeks I will be crossing the border at Buffalo and riding a full day east to the Catskill area. I'll spend the next day slowly making my way up to Lake Placid. The third day I will complete the triangle and cross at Prescott, heading back to Barrie Ont.

I'm looking at a regular state map, but it is lame. Just a few inches of space. I have a GPS but I choose not to use it. I prefer to be low tech.

Are there any great, twisty rides here that can't be missed? I will check out Google maps and get some ideas there too.

thanks, -Al

Hi Tom - thanks very much. The site has a lot of great info and maps. The link not so great but it all worked going in the front door.

So much for copy and paste. Easier than following the link is just to ride around the reservoirs. It's hard to go wrong riding there. It's all beautiful.

I recently did a moto-camp trip in the Catskills... again. I haven't found a bad road up there yet.

My highlights: from rt17 at Livingston Manor, DeBruce Rd to Pole Valley Rd to Frost Valley Road to Big Indian rt. 28.

I'm not kdding, that Frost Valley Rd. might be one of prettiest rides I've ever taken... winds along a creek which apparently flooded during Irene last year - there's occasional road/ bridge damage evident (but all passable as of 6/25/12).
I camped at Willowemoc Camp Grounds and hit the road about 9 or 10am. I don't think I saw another car the whole way until Big Indian. A few bikes going the other way. Did I mention it was an awesome ride/ trip?

Rt 30 along the Pepacton Reservoir is another good one, IMO. It's a faster road, very pretty, but there will be a few cars now and then. It's a sportier ride, where the Pole Rd/ Frost Valley Rd is more "scenic".

Poorly documented HERE.

Have fun - stay safe, and I envy you. That'll be a great ride. I did an overnight trip on my Vee out there last fall in the rain. Even soaking wet it was awesome.

Thanks Steve - I'll print off what you have said here and compare to the roads that I am already thinking of. Maybe I should add in an extra day and not tell the wife?

I was at Disney last August when Irene hit. It somehow missed Florida and caused trouble way up north.

I won't be able to get a hotel in Lake Placid on Saturday night. Damn Iron Man crap going on. Maybe I will ride VT Route 100 from bottom to top instead. Wanted to do that for a while, just never stuck to the whole thing in one day. Maybe stay in St. Albans....

Yes, I did in fact stay in St. Albans, and I`m sure no one else is reading this but me. I find the DL650 to be a let down on all day rides. I have a Dan Vesel backrest and highway pegs but I am still sore from doing two 800km days. I cut my trip one day short because the bike is surging like crazy and will have to go in for service. So, as it stands this will not be a long term bike for me. It does not pass the 10 hour riding test.....

Finding the right seat for any bike is a pain in the ass.

My first two early spring rides this year were 500 (800km) and 600 (965km) mile days respectively, roughly 12 and 14 hours, respectively. All but the last hour or so was very comfortable on the Russell seat.

I haven't heard about DL650's surging though. None of my three have. Did you use the google search box here?
