Monongahela National Forest and area

A buddy and I are planning a trip down through WV and VA, among other places. There looks to be an abundance of really neat roads and areas to explore.

The following roads look interesting, but I'm wondering if anyone knows if they are paved:

A few forestry roads will be fun, but we don't want to be spending all our time on the rougher stuff!

thanks,
Doug

A great deal of the roads in the Monongahela/Spruce Knob area are unpaved/gravel. Some of them stretch for miiiiles. I've been on quite a few, but the ones you have marked are unfamiliar.

Fantatstic place to ride, asphalt or not. Even the slab there is pretty (50/55/33).

Thanks for the info. I'm looking forward to exploring the hills!

Hey teethgringer, is that photo by chance taken on a NF road (CR-46? PR-86?) east of Dyer along the Williams River? Looks mighty familiar to me.

For the West Virginia Route, go here to download detailed maps including road surface types for every road in every county of West Virginia:

http://www.wvdot.com/countyroadmaps/default.asp

For your Stemple Ridge route, you should download the Tucker1 map and the Preston3 map.

I dont know of a similar site for Virginia road surface detail.

That's a full day!

We're planning about six days in the last week of June. There are so many neat looking roads on the map, it is hard to decide which route to take.

Last spring, I was in the area for the first time ever. This road was chosen on a whim, and turned out to be quite fun: http://tinyurl.com/d5wr6w

Take care, perhaps see you on April 26.

33 was great - I took it between Harrisonburg and Columbus on my way home from D.C.

By the time I got to Ravenswood (where the terrain ends) I was getting tired of all the curves and mountains.

Question 4th Annual Sportbike Gathering

So who's going to Denny's in Clearfield Sunday for the gathering? Weather is supposed to be good with mabey the odd thunderstorm thrown in to make things interesting (30% chance). Sounds like decent odds to me.

[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]K7 Wee, rebuilt like new and then some after collision with deer and mildly farkled.
