If you have the time, I had a great ride up through Burke's Garden near Tazewell, VA. You can go north on 81 from Asheville to Wytheville, VA, and get off on Route 52. Follow this to Route 42, then head to Sharon Springs. Look for Route 622, which is called Burke's Garden Rd. It's a really nice twisty gravel road that climbs up over the mountain and down into Burke's Garden. Once you get through Burke's Garden, head to Tazewell, VA, on Route 61 and pick up Route 460. Follow 460 over to US 219. 219 will take you through some really nice twisty roads and lots of scenery all they way through VA, West VA, Maryland and into PA. I've ridden it, and it's a good time. Very rural, very little traffic, lots of small towns to pass through. The gravel road into Burke's Garden shouldn't be a problem with the Harley, unless she is on an Ultra. For the most part it's a well maintained gravel road, but there were a few rough spots from water runoff and some kind of tight switchback type curves. I would have done it on my Road King.
You can actually follow 219 all the way to Buffalo, or else head west and pick up I-79.
I've ridden this route from Burke's Garden to DuBois, and I enjoyed it a lot. On the return trip I came down US 220, which runs parallel to 219; again, lots of nice twisty riding through some mountains when you get into West VA and VA.
"No matter where you go, there you are."
