Ride through PA

I am curious about a nice route to travel through PA, on a north to south route because I am heading down to Maryland for a couple of job interviews. I am coming from the Adirondack region in NY,and I want to eventually make my way to the Harrisburg area so I can continue on my way to MD. I am looking for a fun and scenic route through PA. When looking at the map, there doesn't seem to be a lot of roads that go north-south in central PA. The only one I really notice is RT. 15. Thanks!

Rte 287 will split off from 15 near Tioga. will Skirt down parralell with 15 to around Williamsport. Where you can get back on 15.This is a very nice scenic stretch with some twistys and cool mountain roads. this will by pass a major strech of 15 that is true highway.Between Williamsport and Harrisburg 15 isn't too bad if they aren't working on it.
After that it would be alot of road jumping.

Here's what you do. TimberWulf is right about taking 287 It is SO mcuh more interesting than "mini-I-15". And you are going to love the little town of Wellsboro. About ten miles west of town is Leonard Harrison State Park, with a fine view of the PA Grand canyon. Be sure to stop at the renowned Wellsboro Diner for lunch.

When you get down below Saladasburg and run into US220 turn left (East) and follow that to Williamsport. Pick up 15 South over the mountain. Oh, and you pass the Little League Museum and Hall of Fame, in case you are interested. But as soon as you get over the mountain and get to the traffic light at the bottom turn left again, onto Route 54. Stay on 54 South for like the next 40-50 miles. 54 runs into 901 just below Kulpmont. Stay on 901. There is a little stretch of woodlands just after Pleasant Gap and then a traffic light in the middle of nowhere. 901 turns right (up the hill) and goes toward I-81. That's my daily commute, 68 miles each way. The Federal prison I work at is on the left, just before you get to I-81.

You get on I-81 headed South at exit 116. You get off I-81 somewhere around exit 64 or so. It's at the top of the hill-climb out of Harrisburg, a left hand exit onto 584 toward Camp Hill. In 5 miles you run right back into Route 15 again, but you have skipped all that Harrisburg nonsense. Should be a right hand ramp onto 15. Stay on 15 all the way to Frederick and pick up I-70/270. Or, IMHO, staying on 15 is a much nicer ride.

Pleasant riding.

Thanks!

Very nice, this is what I am looking for. I plan on taking my time in PA. But at the same time I don't want to spend all day going around on different roads that aren't that great. I would like to but I have to make it to my destination sometime.

When will you be making the trip? Maybe a few of us from Pa can hook up with ya for a nice ride through our lovely state.

There's another option out of Williamsport that I use when going to visit my kids in the Leesburg, VA area. All back roads and up and over the ridge mountains south of here.

From Rt. 15 take the Maynard St. exit and turn right and cross the West Branch of the Susquehanna River. Turn right onto PA654 to left onto PA880 until it ends in Rebersburg. Then right onto PA192 and left onto PA445 then left onto PA45 (Milheim) to right onto PA235 to McAlisterville where you turn right onto PA 35. Then left onto US22 for one exit to PA75 toward Port Royal then left onto PA74 to Ickesburg where you turn right onto PA17. When you get to Blaine turn right onto PA274 which takes you over the last mountain and the left turn on to PA75. When you get to Mercersburg turn left onto PA16 then right onto PA416 which turns into MD58 and runs you into Hagarstown, MD.

From Hagarstown there are a lot options from I-70 over to Frederick and then into Washington or Baltimore or more nice back roads that will take you through Harpers Ferry or Boonsboro. At some point the slab becomes the only way to make time into the metro areas but I find that the trip mentioned above only adds an hour or so to my trip vs doing the whole thing on US15.

If you are going down 287 instead of 15 you can get to 880 quicker through jersey shore. When you get to the end of 287 take a right on 220. Take the Jersey Shore Main street exit to the Red Light. Make a left onto 44 south. Follow that for a coupke miles till you come to 880 south take a right. Only 5-10 minutes from 287 to 880. less back tracking. 880 is a beautiful road that goes right up over the mountain two llane the whole way. 45 or 192 could get you back over to 147 south to get to harrisburg if that is still in your trip.

I will be heading down early June, on one of three days, the 3rd, 4th, or 5th. I will know for sure on Monday or Tuesday.

Unfortunately it looks like I won't be taking the bike down, because the wife is coming with me and she cannot stand to ride for that long amount of time. Thanks for all of the responses, I know I will definetly be taking the bike down that way though sometime this summer.
