Ceemack As a long-ago dirt bike rider shopping for his first street bike I may be talking out of the wrong orifice, but I'd definitely vote for an 800 or 850, putting out 80 or 85 hp.

If Mr. Suzuki is reading this, I'm basing my ideas on the factors that might make me buy a KLR or a G650GS instead of a V-Strom.

Being a street-bike rookie I look at this from a slightly different perspective. I sometimes wonder if the 650 is going to be a little too powerful for me to start with, but I also fear that after 6-12 months it won't be quite powerful enough for my heavy carcass and garage-door aerodynamics. The 1000 is probably a little more than I would ever need, and would be a little too expensive to run for a daily commuter; an 800 would fill all my long-term requirements.

It seems to me the ideal 800 would have a switch that changed the fuel-injection mapping on the fly, leaning out the mixture and reducing the power output to something in the 50-60 hp range. This would make the Strom 800 the ideal entry bike: not so much power that you wind up upside-down on the road, and not so underpowered that you want to trade it in when you're still upside-down on your loan.

It would also come in handy for riders who want to save on gas and rear tires, like some of the earlier commenters. That 60+ mpg some people get out of the 50hp G650GS is awfully tempting; it'd be even better if I could get 80hp and 45 mpg out of the same bike when I felt the need. I believe the Hayabusa and B-King already have a similar switch, so Mr. Suzuki already has the basic technology on hand.

I'd also vote for an updated (i.e, better-looking) front end, more appealing color options, and something with lower maintenance needs than a plain ol' chain. All of my options have chains, and the idea of oiling, checking and re-tensioning a chain isn't something about which I'm terribly enthusiastic. The idea of a belt on a sport version and a chain on an adventure version makes sense.

Offer ABS (can't figure why it's not on the 1000), and see about providing a little more stopping power. Can't you just take the front calipers out of that bin labeled "GSX"?

Keep the seat height (unless you want to raise it--it seems kinda low to me! ). The fuel capacity should stay the same, but it would be cool if you could put it 2 or 3 inches closer to the ground without lowering the seat.

It seems like this year's lull in production is a perfect opportunity for Suzuki to trim costs by consolidating the 650 and the 1000 into a single bike, especially if some of the engine parts can come from the C50/M50.

Doc59 I'm happy with my 08 650, just waiting for Suzuki to redesign the looks. Keep the same seat height, same fuel capacity, even the same horsepower suits me. Every other brand is bringing out great looking dual sports, BM, Ducati, Guzzi, even Yamaha looks good. 6 yrs later the strom needs a makeover.

GrahamD Pretty much where I would like to see it go as well.

Year 1 800-850cc v-twin, Drop 650, 1k.

Low spec as is now with NEW COLOURS
Hi Spec Better suspenders for off road, Good USD forks, damping etc oh and don't forget NEW COLOURS

Year 2, watch this space,

V-Strom touring, get the road touring setup right.
V_Strom ADV. Improve radiator positioning, tubeless spoked wheels and spend some time on easier maintenance solution, maybe an encased chain.
Maybe different gearing. and stuff that survives falls.

Year3..um OK new colours

rumours are that the 800cc BMWs have waterpump issues . to the point that owners cant get new ones as they are in huge demand

So OK :

Sport = Under Engine Exhaust and Belt Drive

Adventure = Center Mount / High Mount Exhaust and Chain Final Drive.

NO Problem !!
Not sure about the Buell but the BMW F800S and F800ST have belt drive, the F800GS is chain driven.

Muttley Ditto the 800cc option. I owned a VX800 for 16 years (!) and NEVER wanted for more motor.
I've occasionally thought about the "perfect" bike and decided it would be an 800cc twin with belt drive (yes, there's a HD in my past). Much as I like my V-Strom I'd rather have a parallel twin (more compact, easier to service, etc.) but there's nothing that says you can't have a balancer shaft.

And YES, I did ride a BMW F800ST but something about it turned me off.

I think a competive weight could be achieved with an 800cc Vee. It only makes sense that the current 650 motor would end up a little porkier to handle 800cc power, but Suzuki could easily shave weight elsewhere.

The stock exhaust system is so heavy that a lighter version could offset much of the weight gain in the engine. Shave a few ounces to a couple of pounds here and there and you would have a bike that weighs the same as the current 650. The problem is, the cost would quickly skyrocket to the range of the DL1K.

I don't think a new 800cc Vee is very unlikely at this point. It seems more likely, in my opinion, that if Suzuki were to revamp the V-strom line-up, they would come up with an all-new, clean-sheet design or at least a major overhaul. This would provide the opportunity for Suzuki to replace the 1000 with an 800 that comes with longer travel premium suspension, optional ABS brakes w/ switch ala BMW (Bueler, Bueler, Bueler), tidier factory luggage options. They could either keep a revamped DL or a less expensive, new version of the 650 as a cheaper alternative to the up-level 800. If Suzuki went with more of a clean-sheet design, they would be able to make a lighter weight 800cc motor that would keep the weight down.

I think given the current ecomonic situation, this is highly unlikely and probably not likely even if everybody was still blowing money left and right. It seems the Big 4 are all slow to catch on to trends in the American market. I would be less surprised to see new Stroms introduced in Europe. I think given the increasing growth in the dual-sport market, it would make sense to offer a more dirt-able Strom from the factory and then a street/touring oriented version much like BMW does with their current F800 line and how they did several years ago with the F650.

The 650 crank is already a bit undersized (as anybody who races SVs knows. ) so you can't just plop some 90mm jugs on the existing bottom end. Stroking the current setup is bad too, the conrod length-to-stroke ratio goes all to hell. The whole motor would need to be redesigned to handle the extra power and would end up at least 20 lbs heavier.
