Rte 12 through CT into Mass - nice alternative to I-395

We're thinking of taking a ride up to Singletary Pond in Mass and the area to visit friends. We'll be taking the Orient Ferry to New London and then up.

How is route 12 going north through Ct and up into Mass?
I thought it would be more fun to take back roads than just get on I-395.
Route 21 and 193 looks good for the northern part also.
Other suggested rides around that area?

I know parts of Rte 12 that are okay in MA, but some of it is best avoided. Google maps satellite view is a good tool for this type of research.

route 12

Let me suggest route 97, route 198 or route 169. The northeastern part of Connecticut is beautiful and these roads take you through some really sweet countryside. Enjoy!

Definitely agree with Scoot! I've got to go down there this afternoon and I will run down 169 to 97 to 12 to 82 to get to Norwich. That part of CT is very nice.
