opinion needed from NW Baystaters

I'll soon be going on my annual leaf peeping overnighter. This year I plan to ride around the Greenfield/North Adams area. When do you guys think would be prime foliage days this year? I'll probably go mid week to avoid the weekend motel price gouging.

I just got back an hour ago from a week up in Burlington, VT on business. I'd say it's another week before really peaking up there. The colors are many and still a sight to see, but muted this year...nothing like years of past with those eye popping bright crimson colors. This year is more brown. Still beautiful though. That said, I'd say another 1-2 weeks before peaking down in the Berkshire area. Last weekend I was up around Belfast, Maine and the colors were not near peaking, but that was at sea level up to around 1500 feet. Columbus Day weekend at higher elevations is nearly always guaranteed to be a good drive no matter what.

You won't be dissapointed next week or the week after. Tempertures may be an issue. Gonna have some c-c-cold mornings! All the state parks close to camping today, October 12! I think that sucks, but it's what they do. If camping, you'll have to look into private camp grounds. Mohawk Park Pub, on Rt 2 just west of Charlemont may be able to give you a nice site on the banks of the Deerfield River. Proprietors, Paul and Deb, are good folks and riders, too.
Ride safe. :-)

Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing. - quote attributed to Helen Keller.

For some reason I usually go too early and find half of the trees are still green. I am determined to go the right time this year. I'm hoping that all will fall into place this year.......peak foliage, dry weather and time off from work. Because of my extreme wussness, camping won't be happening

I did 350 miles last weekend across NH into Maine to Portland and back to White River Junction VT. Found nice colors everywhere but the colors are definately muted this year. Very little reds. Watch the tempos as we are getting scattered snow in areas. At the CT lakes Sunday and hit heavt snow. Good Luck and Happy trails!!
