Question Any VStrom 1000 Owners Near Chicago?

I joined the forum a while back because over the past 3 years, I've had an on again off again fascination with the big VStrom. In that time I've owned a 2001 VFR800 and now a 2001 CBR1100XX - both set up for sport touring. I've poured over reviews and discussions on the DL and I've read about the common issues folks have with it, but I really like a lot of what I read.

The way the XX inhales long stretches of road is amazing when I'm getting out of the area to find some decent roads. But after putting a few hundred miles recently on a KLR650, I've grown to really appreciate the dirtbike seating position that it affords. I wouldn't want to put big miles on a KLR but the Strom seems like it would give me that riding position along with some good wind management (after possible mods), nice luggage options, and a literbike motor that most reviewers praise.

I've had no luck finding any DL1000's for sale in the area, and I don't want to make any kind of decision about buying out of state until I can check one out in detail. I'd sell my XX to fund the VStrom purchase, so I want to make an informed decision that I won't regret....

Is there anyone in the area that would be interested in letting me check out your DL1000 and selling me on the idea? I'm in Westmont IL, so I'm in the western burbs of Chicago, but I'm happy to have an excuse to take a ride to check one out!

No, I don't live in your neighborhood, but I must tell you this: I do have 03 VFR800 and DL1000 and even that VFR is a superior bike (in my opinion), I never looked back after my first ride on V Strom.

I am in Naperville - have a number of bikes but the V-Strom is the favorite! PM me if you would like to try it out.

Thanks for the reply!

It actually comes just a bit late - I found an Aprilia Caponord for sale in Lockport, and after a test ride I grabbed it. I may always wonder if the Strom would have been a better choice, but I loved the few minutes I spent on the Capo. It's a 2002 with only 2500 miles on it. It's showroom new, and comes with unused Aprilia panniers..

My Blackbird was purchased last week, so my garage briefly saw 3 bikes, but will be down to the Caponord and KLR650 for a while.....

Thanks a lot for the offer though!

You probably found it the say way I did, by searching for VStrom on Chicago Craigslist, lol. The ad said something like "Like a VStrom, only better!". Well, unless I ever put some decent miles on a Strom, I'll never know if that statement has any weight behind it. But due to the fact that I was having trouble finding a DL1000 locally, the super low miles, and the very reasonable price, I decided to jump on the opportunity before it passed me by.

I know for a fact that the Caponord will require more TLC than a Strom. In fact, after putting about 40 miles on it, I have the tank and plastics stripped off and have spent about 6 hours so far cutting, soldering, and shrink wrapping wires and their associated connectors. These bikes have several well documented electrical flaws that can be addressed before they are a problem. They were also sold with plastic fuel fittings that turn brittle with ethanol, so those were replaced with metal.

This weekend I should have it all re-assembled, though I won't have much chance to ride it. I'm really looking forward to some miles on this bike though!

Can any of you Strom owners in the area recommend someplace where I can get into some dirt or gravel this summer?
