Cleveland to the UP to ND/SD!

I'm planning a trip from Cleveland to the Badlands. I figure I could slab it from Cleveland to Sault Ste Marie in a day. Mapquest puts it at around 7 hours. Then I'd take my time and ride around Lake Superior, maybe take a few back roads, check out some of the parks, etc. Then drop down in the the US and check out ND and SD. Then bushwack my way back to Chicago area and then slab it the last day back to Cleveland. I figure ~10 days. No set plan or itinerary.

I'd be camping and eating at diners mostly. I'd have some camping food along too.

I'm planning on doing this in May but my schedule is pretty flexible.

Copper Harbor

You didn't ask and may already know but....Copper Harbor is a fantastic ride, I hear the north coast of Superior is the best.....and of course northern MN. I plan to do that again this Sept.....Enjoy the ride

I hope this doesn't sound "dickish" as that is not my intent.

Having done a lot of multi day trips, including an 18 day cross country trip mostly solo, and a 12 day trip with 2 other riders (one of whom was not at the same level as the other guy and I), and countless 3-4 day trips solo and with others of varying skill sets, I feel like I have enough experience to tell you: You do not want to take a long trip with people you don't know and haven't ridden with extensively beforehand.

Different people have different riding styles, different expectations, varying stamina, different budgets, different family commitments, different levels of determination towards the task at hand, and so forth.

You can pretty much suck it up for a day ride if the stranger you are with has a different style than you do, but on a multi day trip, it is going to become an aggravation and you will end up resentful and not enjoy the ride as much as you had planned.

Now if you are already friends with a guy, and you have differing riding styles, that can make a trip more tolerable, because you already have a foundation with that fellow that extends beyond riding (as was the case with my 12 day trip and the second rider). But if you don't know the guy, and riding is the only commonality, please... for the sake of your memories of the trip-to-be, don't go with him without some sort of "verification process":

If you have a local guy who might be interested in going, ride with him several times and take at least one overnight trip with him before you commit.

If ya take costal scenic hwy 25 around the thumb of michigan, instead of I-75 north thru michigan, I might accompany you for that leg. I'm based in the detroit metro area.

I will say, riding from cleveland to SSM in 7 hrs is very ambitious....mapquest may be accurate, but having done the drive myself, you will be stopping a lot more than you plan on stopping since there's lots of distractions along the way.

Looks like it's going to be out west instead.

Thanks for all of the input. I hear you about going on long trips with strangers. I did that last August on my trip to Nova Scotia. We definitely had different personalities but I appreciated the safety factor and splitting costs for campsites. I figured if things don't go well, I'll just go on my own.

(copied and pasted from ADVrider)

I plan on leaving Ohio on 6/7/14 and heading to the Black Hills, Badlands and Yellowstone. Then I intend to drop south and head to Moab, Canyonlands, Natural Bridges, Valley of the Gods Road, Monument Valley, Canyon Du Chelly and Mesa Verde.
I'll probably slab it to Iowa and then start hitting the back roads. I'll be doing 200-300 miles a day, 6-8 hours. I like to take my time, stop and take pictures and chat with the local folks. I would like to do some dirt roads but nothing too technical.
I'll be camping and eating at local spots. I'll also have some backpacking food just case.
I'm pretty laid back and have no definite itinerary.

If interested please reply to post or send PM.

Sounds like a great trip and you will no doubt have a great time. As for me riding with folks on a trip that I do not know well and ride with regularly.......not gonna happen, you are a braver soul than me.
