Looking for road reccomendations in WV and OH

Next week I'm traveling to a conference in Akron Ohio from Winston Salem NC. My buddy and I are planning 2 days to get there and we have the 1st day planned out but I'm looking for ideas for the 2nd day.

From Winston I'll meet him in East Bend, then travel to Sparta and up to Marion VA. We'll then hit the Back of the Dragon up to Tazwell and then head toward Bluefield, possibly up through Princeton and into Beckly where we may spend the night.

The 2nd day we'll depart from Beckly head up 19 through Fayetteville and ride around the New river Gorge. We'll than head up to Hawks Nest and take 60 up to Charleston. From there it looks like we'll just ride 77 to Akron.

Are there any scenic routes between Charleston and Akron that would be worth taking?

On the way back we're planning the interstate the whole way and hope to knock it out in one day.

Thanks!

Since you have day 1 planned, I won't offer suggestions on that.

I would suggest -though time may not be on your side with this - riding WV 60 through the Hawks Nest to Gauley Bridge to WV 16, and then 16 north to the Ohio River. Follow 2 north along the river to Sistersville WV, cross the river on the $3 ferry, and then take Ohio SR 800 all the way north through Canton towards Akron.

800 is a very nice road until Dennison, at which point it becomes 4 lane for 15 miles, but then becomes a nice 2 lane again until Canton. The southern 80 miles, from the river to Dennison, are very twisty and lightly traveled.

The added bonus is that 800 is within 20 miles of I-77 and if you are running behind, you can always shoot west and then haul ass north on the interstate.

There's a million great roads in SE Ohio, but 800 is the most direct yet scenic route to where you want to go.

Thumbs up US-21 is fun.

I like riding US-21 from Elkin NC to Wytheville VA. It twists a lot,
and takes me through various interesting communities.

If you find you do not like it, you can use the Blue Ridge Parkway
for part of the voyage, but that mainly goes across your route,
so it won't bring you much closer to Akron.

Good luck on your ride. If you encounter Amish folks in their horse-drawn
carriages, you might want to pull in the clutch and glide almost silently
past the horses. I reckon those horses are very well trained, but I think
it best to avoid startling them, so I do that every time.

Scenic routes ?

At best you will only have time for food and fuel. But as you must cross the Blue Ridge Parkway anyway you should take a break and ride a short section of it.

Good tips, thanks! The WV 60, the ferry & Ohio 800 sounds like what were looking for!

We have an extra day on the way back if we need it.

Thanks!

MeefZah speaks the truth when he says there are many good roads in SE Ohio. Ohio really knows how to make great backroads.

Another one is SR-555 (the triple nickel) between Zanesville and Parkersburg (just West of Marietta).

See, everyone says 555 is the bomb; yet I really don't like it. It's a bit too technical, too many blind corners, lots of gravel and cinders in those corners, and farm animals.

I have to admit that I was speaking from the perspective of a Miata pilot and not a bike. At least not yet. I can see what you mean though. Some of those corners and dips were as blind as they come.

Thanks for the tips! We're going to take MeefZah advice, but probably take 77 from charleston/60 up to 2 and follow that along the river and cross at Sisterville and then follow 800 up to canton. Really looking forward to the trip!
