¿Baja anyone?

I'm thinking about heading to Baja California sometime in November (after the race) or December for a week or 10 days. I'm mostly an asphalt-and-hotel kind of rider, but I don't mind a little *light* off-roading and could probably be talked into camping a night or two.

Thoughts/tips/anyone wanna come with? I espeak Espanish, if that helps.

San Diego Adventure Riders

My local riding group has some folks who could be a resource for you. No cost to join and pick some brains. They're more dirt oriented but will still have some tips. I'm about 20 minutes from the border so if you need a stop off point or someone to host goin' over maps, etc, let me know.

Todays news, 26 bodies found near the border. You really want to go do tacos in Mexico? I have Mexican birthed friends that won't go back.

9 found hanging from Mexican bridge - CNN.com

At least only 9 of 'em were hanging. I'm in the SOB category on our local site (Scared of Baja) but many have a great time and zero problems. But then I don't stroll through Compton in the evening, either.

You mean this?

At least 23 people killed in Mexican border city - KFVS12 News & Weather Cape Girardeau, Carbondale, Poplar Bluff

This was about 1500 miles from Tijuana. And they seem to have been targeted as part of a war between narco gangs:

Borderland Beat: Nine bodies found hanging off Nuevo Laredo bridge

I'm well aware of the safety issues, but the dozens of websites I've perused all indicate that outside Tijuana, Baja California is quite safe. Safer than Oakland, anyway... and I used to work there. But thanks for your concern & for your kind offer!

Excellent point...hence the Compton comment. Def seems like targeted opposing sides. There have been less "caught in the crossfire" reports lately so maybe the tourism board finally stepped in.

Offer stands.

Mexico is safer than US

If you are looking for drugs or weapons in Mexico, you are asking for it. However, if you go there to ride, it's the safest place on earth. I live in L.A., and gangs and traffic are a lot more dangerous here than all of Mexico. I have been going south of the border at least 4 times a year and do Baja once a year, and knock on wood, no problemo...

Can you be persuaded into moving up your travel? I'm considering going the end of September/begining of October. I have a friend (also on a Strom) that may be going as well.

Sounds like our riding style is similar. I was hoping to make it all the way down to Cabo. I have a thread started on here also.

¡Yo también! I've been gorging on trip reports over on ADVRider, so now it's a matter of when, not if. My original post pertained to *last* year, but unfortunately I wasn't able to make it. So this is the year.

Problem is, I don't think I'll be able to spare much more than a week + 2 weekends total from SF. So riding all the way to Cabo would be unrealistic. But I could definitely join you for part of the route, though not till the 2nd week of Oct. at the very earliest.
