Wee Coolant leak - ut oh.

I have noticed twice in the last 3 weeks, after my bike has sat for 2-3 days (rarely ever happens ) there is a spot of coolant on the ground underneath it about the size of a nickel.

I can't see the leak, yet. Wonder if anyone has any experience with a coolant leak, common leaky spot, etc etc.

I am a daily rider and haven't noted any spotting or dripping (even a tiny spot) on the days I'm riding... which really doesn't mean a thing in the grand scheme of leak-locating.

Ideas?

Thank you,
~Sarah

Generally it's a loose hose clamp. Check those first.

Appreciate that insight! I'll pull fairings tonight and see what I can find.

same for me - check the hose clamps to the radiator

my clamp seemed to start leaking when the weather cooled off. I thought something serious so had it looed at by the dealer when brought in for other "before the warranty ends" service. Because it was a loose clamp, said it wasn't under warranty and they charged me; last business for that dealer...

Sounds like a dealer that didn't want your business!

No luck on clamps, they all (that I could see) look great. I think I'll have to pull off the gas tank to look at what's under it and see if anything jumps out. My leak is so slow/tiny that it is only hitting the ground after sitting a few days, that's making it tough to find... thought MAYBE I saw a little dried pooling mark on the lower left corner of my radiator. Read the cooling system chapter in the shop manual last night, now I'm wondering about my water pump. Only 30,000 miles on it though, doesn't seem like it should be failing so soon, UNLESS.......

Last night at bedtime my husband commented that the bike is filled with "green" antifreeze - and perhaps it's supposed to be the "red stuff" antifreeze. I will have to look at the coolant spec tonight and see if it's supposed to be the other kind, as we're under the impression "green stuff" is generally corrosive on aluminum components...

Kind of a scary thought for me, how much damage could be done by the last owner using the wrong coolant? :bom_freak:

Anything's possible, but color doesn't mean anything. Mine came with green (still in there at 22k, haven't changed it yet). You want an ethylene glycol type (see the manual).

Welcome back to the rainy season in Seattle ... pretty soon there'll be so much algae on the driveway that you won't notice that pesky green coolant, so don't sweat it.
