Head gasket issue

I just found out I need the head gasket replaced on my 2009 DL650 v-strom, 48,000 miles. Any suggestions as to how much it will cost and is it worth it ?

I appreciate any feedback from my fellow stromtroopers, thank you.

If having a shop do it, they should be able to give you an exact number.

Failed head gaskets are exceedingly rare. How did you conclude it is a failed head gasket?

I have a mechanic buddy do my minor work on it. He was replacing the TPS since i was having issues of it dieing on my and losing RPM's while riding and so on. He did and it didn't solve the issue so he did some testing and found gas or coolant in the oil, looked like chocolate milk when he changed it, also found oil in the airbox. The spark plug was covered in goo. Idk what else it could be, he ran the test on the front and back cylinders and they were 140 and 150 PSI respectively. He isn't confident enough to work on head gaskets so I am left having to take it to a dealer or mechanic shop and pay an arm and a leg but I am not sure what else to do.

I know there is a thread from a few years ago about head gasket and it turned out not to be the issue but he doesnt state just what the issue was. My bike has almost the exact same miles and the exact same symptoms that he was experiencing.

The fact that he says it wasn't the head gasket is reassuring, I am of the same belief that head gasket failure is extremely rare. But I dont know what else it may be or what I would ask a mechanic/dealership to look for.

Any running issues caused by a head gasket would show up in the compression test. 140 and 150 are close together, telling me that there is no compression leakage with the gasket. At least when checked, they can leak at operating temps and not when cold I suppose. Head gaskets can leak coolant yet not have an effect on running of the engine. Milkiness of the oil is a sign there is contamination, but it does not have to be coolant. These engines are known for having condensation in the crankcase that can make the oil look milky in cooler temps and under certain riding conditions. Oil in the air box is not unheard of, some have noted that after high speed/high rpm running for some distance. I don't see a head gasket being a source of this. If not confident enough to work on the engine, I would advise getting another mechanic to look at the bike. Before you spend a lot of money on a problem that may not exist.

I would change the oil and see how quickly it goes back to milky afterwards. Are you loosing coolant and if so how much. More than one thing can make a spark plug look bad.

There are simply too many things going in too many directions here to assume a head gasket. You need to start at "A" and then work towards "B".

I know some threads have mentioned the water pump seal. I just don't know where to start for A. like I said, I just ride. I let the mechanics do the mechanical stiff :P


Thank you for your insight, I too don't think it is the head gasket, since the compression is pretty normal, but I don't know why it stalls and dies on me and where the contamination is coming from.

Water pumps are designed to allow coolant to escape through a weep hole if the seal fails. Not into the crankcase. Not impossible for that to happen, but an unusual event would have to occur to allow that. None of this pertains to the engine dying.

Are the throttle body boots secured properly? Is the TPS actually adjusted properly? Was it replaced? Not knowing more about when, where, and how it acts when it dies I cannot say for sure but a TPS issue is one thing I would suspect. There really is no cure for that except to replace the TPS itself and adjust it properly. Fix one thing at a time and you might find other issues are also solved as a result.
