Swingarm Chain Wear Protector--Alrernatives?

2006 DL1000K6, swingarm chain wear protector (aka Buffer, Chain Touch Defense) is worn. Ordered one. Supplier informs me that they're on backorder everywhere, ETA at Suzuki USA wearhouse is May 1, 2019.

Has anyone figured out an alternative to the original part?

Has anyone figured out how to rebuild the original part to get a little bit more life out of it?

Anyone have a spare they'd like to sell? I'll sell you back the one I ordered when it gets here.

Swingarm is sitting on shop floor waiting for part, this is holding me up. I've always disliked JIT inventory supply chain theory and practice, too many weak links.

Hoovey,

Thanks for the tip. Just ordered it. They claim ETA my place 4-4-19. Pics show it's in way better condition than the one I removed.

I guess I was a little late. The ebay one is cheaper anyway.

Wonder what caused it to wear out, is there a 16 tooth sprocket on the front?

Sounds like it was on national backorder anyway. Even if it shows available, doesn't mean it can ship out. None of these online stores stock much in the way of OEM parts...

Interesting morning.

Placed order for slightly used chain defense buffer on ebay. Order confirmed, card billed. A few minutes later email arrived, seller cancelled order, charge refunded to card. Like I said, interesting, and frustrating.

Just In Time inventory is nice for the supplier, save vendors from having lots of money tied up in inventory that may or may not sell when they want it to, but it always means that someone along the line can be held hostage for those parts until they arrive at the distributor, wholesaler, or retailer. I've always disliked JIT inventory. Bean counters go ballistic if you try to squirrel away a few parts you know you'll need or be able to sell soon. Shipping companies like JIT, keeps them in business.

I'll go back to watching ebay for another used one. Experiment with gick to repair the old one (hockey puck, marine tex, pine sap, something should work) And wait for the new one to arrive in May.

Why did the old one wear like it did? I'm at least the third owner so I can only guess that a previous owner ran the chain too tight. The rib down the top is totally gone, there's a hole the size of a dime in the center of the bottom run a few inched back from the front--that one makes be scratch my head.

Back to kitchen remodel for my kid.

Here's a link to a fellow in NZ who made a replacement swingarm chain slider for a Cagiva. There may be a time when we need to make our own for Vstroms.

On with the search,

I still say make sure it doesn't have a 16 tooth on the front, or if it doesn't NOW.....it may have in the past. That AND a tight chain would cause wear like that very likely.
