Can't Get to That Front Spark Plug! Any Tips?

Hey guys,

I've got the tank off of my 2018 1000 to swap out the air filter. The bike has 25,000 miles on it so I'd like to replace the plugs while I'm under there and not worry about them for a while. Yes, I know they can probably go much longer.

As you know, the back three are easy but that one behind the radiator is a pain. The service manual just says to remove the mounting bolts and move it forward which I did but it doesn't move much and I can't quite get my hand in there enough to get a good grip on the cap. I am contemplating removing radiator which I'd like to avoid.

Any tips or tricks?

For what it's worth, I couldn't get my average sized hand in there either. I removed the top radiator hose, made a mess, cleaned it up and changed the plug. If there is a trick- I couldn't figure it out. The second time I removed some coolant first.


There just doesn't seem to be enough give in the hoses to get the space I needed. Good luck.

Thanks. That's what I wound up doing too. Then I put the hose back on and drained the rest of the coolant. Might as well change that too so I can forget about it for another 30k or so miles. Moving the radiator forward with those hoses still attached as the service manual states simply does not proved enough room.

Only 30K interval? I changed mine at 80K miles due to a valve check and they looked fine. I only changed them since I had a set with me.
I noticed no difference in the way the motor ran with the new plugs.
The suggested replacement interval for my old beemers was 10K. I gave up on that and can't remember a plug ever fouling out or burning up.

After loosening the radiator use the spark plug tool out of the tool kit. It works.

I forgot about the tool kit- will try that next time... if there is a next time.


As for the durability of iridium plugs, I guess I had to see for myself. Changed them as recommended (~17k?) the first time, and then around 50k the second time. No sign of wear or fouling either time but when I got to that point it was just as easy to put the new ones in. Live and learn.


FYI- The specified NGK plugs can be had through NAPA at $9ea rather than the $25 through cycle stores. Same number, gap, etc.; everything but the Suzuki logo on the box. Ordered online and went to my local store when they arrived in a few days.

That is my feeling too. Although, in a car, the average RPM (cruising to peak) is probably 1/2 what it is in the Strom. I changed mine in the 07 Strom at about 50,000 miles and they looked pretty good still.

As for getting in there, I used the socket in the toolkit also. I loosened the radiator mounts, put a heavy piece of cardboard between the radiator and my tools, and cussed.

That is a good point and one I lost a bet on with another gear-head at work. You could be right and you could be wrong. Depends on the engine. If you have points on an older engine, it depends on where the points take their signal from, the cam or the crank. Further, on modern cars with coil on plug ignitions, they can fire every crank revolution just like a modern bike does.

I think I lost my bet by technicality, but he had me thinking about it which was worth the effort.
