Engine replacement

I have a 2002 DL1000 with 138k on it, I am thinking of fitting a 2009 DL1000 engine with only 30k on it. Will it work and what will be involved? Thanks from down under!

As far as I know all the hard points are exactly the same. What you will get into is the electrical. Your 2002 has a different rotor and stator. You could swap them into the newer engine or research going to the later higher output rotor/stator to see what it takes to make it work. I know there are differences in the ECU between the two, so it would be easier to figure on swapping all sensors from the old engine onto the new. If they all go in the same place that should take care of that.

Somewhere on this forum there's a story, or there are stories, of an older Vee with 400K+ miles on it. I think little, if anything, has been done to that engine (other than oil changes, plugs, probably valve checks / adjusts, etc.).

You mention mileage. Just thought I'd mention this well-documented, very high-mileage Vee, as a reason to not worry much about only 138 (kilometers? 86K miles?) on it.

Maybe there's another reason, or maybe you just like wrenching...

Good luck regardless.

2007 Wee. Blue. Bought at 5K miles. Sold at 32K+ miles. Gone but not forgotten.

2012 Wee2 Adventure. Black. Bought at 26K miles. Now 46K+. Love it!

I surged for the post with the high mileage, my bad 😂. North of 300k miles and still going strong, that has to say something! I also found the posts about the clutch chudder and I reckon that’s the noise, not the gearbox. Classic louder with clutch released in neutral. I will do the brass spacer trick on the basket and see how we go. Absolutely love the bike and happy to do what ever it takes to keep it running smooth.

You may have idle hammer or the chudder or any other problem. Try www.werksparts.com Realshelby can help you confirm it. I am sure there are youtube videos. Seems like a big jump to a replacement engine before you diagnose exactly what the issue is. It runs and does not smoke/clank/leak? kfh000

You can read WERA688 's posts here about his 2003 DL 1000 that has at my last contact 438,000 miles on it. That will give you a good idea of what does wear out and need replacement as the miles add up.
