the "McMaster tool tube"

There is an old saying in race car engineering circles (not me but some of my friends) that you can put a man on the moon with only 2 catalogs…McMaster and Aircraft Spruce.

I want my extensive and very well thought out "light" tool kit (all info gained from the 207 page tool thread on advrider...THANKS!) to have the weight low and up front. I have plenty on the rear. I also want it locked or unnoticeable.

On my 17 DL650 XT, I have a spot on the left side of my Ravetech skid plate that has a lot of unused space and I kept trying to fit first a small dry bag, then a rigid abs pipe in there but the area is slightly curved and nothing but a slight oval and somewhat flexible shape can fit. What could work and can hold tools and be waterproof…really waterproof…submersible….yes underwater….and needs no straps and is stealthy so even though unlocked it is likely not even noticeable???

I hacked in to an Armenian troll farm server and used all the computing muscle in the world plus about 40 cups of pacific bold coffee and I think I finally have a breakthrough.

I’m calling it the “McMaster”

From McMaster I ordered 2 feet of 2.5” id rubber hose #5285K157 and some end caps #6448K113 then cut one 13” to go in the skid plate and the other 11” fits perfectly on the upper front of the skid plate like a typical KLR pvc tool tube except it is a much flatter oval in shape so the front wheel should not hit it on compression. Nothing else could fit up there but this so far. The caps take some effort to get all the way on and are not coming off by vibration.

These hold all my tools, are water proof and very unnoticeable. The only issue I have left is to be able to attach the front one with heavy duty zipties and have them bonded to the outside of the rubber pipe so they do not have to be cinched down as much and still allow access from either side. Loads of space.

Road Testing is next and I have full confidence in the skid plate one and about 90% with the front one. These can also be pipe clamped or ziptied to any flat or curved surfaces all over the bike and they even have a talc coating on the inside so tool bags move in and out.

Odd for sure and not much use for 95% of Strom owners here.........if it works for you and comes in very handy, it will be so worth it. For the kind of riding you like to do, sounds like an Africa Twin or Tiger 800 would've been a better choice.

I read all 207 pages and learned loads....some very clever tricks in there...start reading my friend. Here is my first attempt at a tool kit based on that:

installed the front one using 2 "gear tie" and very solid. Both are on the bike with all tools inside and down low.
