Some maintenance and some problems..

Still kinda new here.

So today I wanted to install my new K&N filter and iridium plugs on the 04 650 w.24k miles.

As you know, its a bear getting to the air filter and once I was there, I discovered the previous owner had the same bright idea and also installed a K&N. Oh well, now I have a backup. It was quite dirty. Installed the plugs and found it wasn't nearly as difficult as people made it out to be. Didn't even bend a fin with my shoe spacer idea! Installed grip puppies. Getting new Tourances installed tomorrow as well.

Now to the bad. I wanted to install a Madstad bracket and I guess its not compatible with my windscreen. Brand is Secdum which I've never heard of. Curious to know if any others have run in to this issue?

It would help if you listed your year and model. I'm sure Madstad makes a bracket to fit the bike but it would need a windscreen compatible with the stock mounts for a 2004-2012 DL1000 or a 2004-2011 DL650. I think you have a Secdem screen made in France. French Windshield (Ermax + Secdem)

The bracket can be angled a bit and your screen looks like it is missing some grommets.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

Thanks. 2004 DL650. Think I can order the missing grommets?

What screen was on there before, no grommets? If you have non go to a hardware store. You likely find some Nylon or Rubber parts that can be made to fit the job I would think.

Yeah, I could. But the bracket still wont work with my current windshield. So, Im thinking about going with a CalSci windscreen. Another $200. You know, this is like having a damn boat! Money pit.

As far as I know (and that might not be far...) if that screen fit your bike before, it should fit the Madstad bracket, as the Madstad hole spacing matches a 2004-2011.
From the photo, it looks close to fitting, are you sure you have the Madstad installed correctly? Maybe you could bolt the screen to the Madstad first, then see how close the whole thing goes to fitting the bike?

There are holes in the sky where the rain gets in,
and the holes are very small, that's why rain is thin.

Why you say it does not fit. The picture seems to indicate that it will. You need to adjust the Madstad bracket a bit it seems but the hole spacing seems ok. Did you measure the hole spacing to be sure it does not fit?

In the worst case you can drill one more set of holes into the screen. Its sufficient to have 4 bolts hold the screen.

It doesnt fit my particular windshield BUT there is a happy ending. After putting the stock H bracket back in one notch higher, I did not notice any buffering today on the ride to the shop to have the new tires put on.

Lastly, and I really need a definitive answer here, is it harmful to my engine to have no silencer on my Staintune exhaust? The bike came with it, and I damaged the silencer when it fell out and got run over. I can repair it, and will use it for long rides, but I thoroughly enjoy the sound without it. At the same time, I DO NOT want to hurt the engine.

Thanks
