Step-by-step: Universal Vista Cruise Control Installation

This is a really simple and straigtforward installation, especially on '07 and newer DL650's with the unitized throttle reel and switch housing (<-- Thanks for this info, Greywolf!)

These pictures document the installation on a 2010 DL650 SEA Touring.

1. The farkle: Vista Universal Cruise Control for 7/8" handlebars (Model # MCUVOO).


2. If you have OEM handguards installed, you will need to loosen the bar end weight screw and gently push back the handguard clip.

3. You will need to source the wrenches; Allen keys are supplied with the kit.


4. Installation instructions:

Vista Universal Cruise Control for 7/8" handlebars (Model # MCUVOO)

5. You will need a parts tray. I use a hubcap from an early '70s Chevrolet that I found in the ditch while walking along the side of the highway near my house.


6. Works as advertised.


7. Place handle bar clamp around handle bar, snug against switch housing. For '07 and later DL650 installs, you do not need to move brake lever assembly and/or switch assembly to make room for clamp. It just fits right in there!


8. Slide the collar/slip ring assembly over the end of throttle grip against switch housing. Insert correct size rubber filler between slip ring and grip with “JOINT” of filler on bottom side, midway between two set screws.


9. Attach arm to clamp using 7/16 bolt with lock washer. Hand tighten bolts for now. Place thumb lever slot over eye bold, as shown. Depress spring to line up holes, and insert proper length self tapping screw (the short one will work on newer Wees).


10. Tighten 7/16″ bolt between clamp and arm. Rotate Universal Vista to the desired position and tighten handle bar clamp bolts, making sure arm clears switch housing, starter button and kill switch.


11. CRUISE CONTROL ADJUSTMENT - Twist throttle to half position and thumb lever down to “SET” position. Throttle should hold snugly in this position. Flipping thumb lever to “OFF” position releases cruise control hold, throttle should return to “OFF” position. Tightening nut (A) will increase cruise control hold; loosening nut (A) will decrease cruise control hold.
Always make adjustments ¼ turn at a time in the “SET” position. Always check to assure that throttle can be rotated both ways in “SET” position after adjustment.


12. OFF


13.ON


Total installation time: 25 - 30 mins., with no modifications to the motorcycle required.

Thanks, good write up.

Why do these outfits call a throttle lock a cruise control???

Well, how does it work? EZ on and off? Do you feel comfortable & safe with it? Ever stick or anything like that?

+1 agreed, it is a throttle lock. (Don't shoot me... I'm just the impartial field reporter...)

Very easy on and off. When the lever is ON, you can still make minor adjustments to the throttle with the lock engaged... the lock maintains your new throttle adjustment. I like the position of the lock lever with this install; it aligns naturally with your thumb on the handlebar, and is in the proper position for a quick release if necessary.

I had one of these on my '82 Honda V45 Magna "P.M.L." (Pre Monica Lewinsky). Feels the same as that one did many moons ago... and I felt very comfortable and safe using that one over many hours of riding.

The grip is untouched in such an installation. It's totally stock. It's this kind that needs extra space.


Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

Oxford heated grips...

I'm looking at the Vista Cruise I just got and can't see how the hell I can get it over the
Oxford heated grips large flange where the wires connect to hand grip.

Has anyone doe an installation like this??

I didn't install the oxfords, so not sure how they would come off on throttle side...have switched bars, but that was no issue. There doesn't appear to be space with the oxford throttle side grip for a VC to mount??

When you hokked this up, how did you compensate for the beveled edge on the throttle tube, Did you just grind it flat to get it close enough to the housing so it would work?

I'd also be interested to find out if you drilled the second hole in the bottom of the throttle housing to fit the screw in. I've basically done the same thing you did, but didn't check the posts until after I started grinding.... oops!

The distance between the flat side of the beveled piece and the switch housing was perfect for the NEP CC4 I installed. The The screw into the housing uses the stock threaded hole. A longer screw and a piece of tubing under the screw head allow fixing the arm in the correct position.
