rear sprocket "spin"

I'm doing my first chain and sprocket replacement on my 08 DL1000. I was laying beside the bike looking at the wear on the rear sprocket. There is no hooking seen, but the slots that are supposed to be a "U" where the chain links engage are getting elongated. The chain is now past its service length too. The chain has about 32,000 miles on it.

I noticed that the rear sprocket moves with the chain slightly. So say, if I were to ride away on the bike, it looks like the rear sprocket will travel with the chain about a 1/16th of an inch or so. I'm guessing that is not supposed to happen. (At least I've never noticed it before when I changed tires or did maintenance to the chain). So besides buying a chain as well as front and rear sprockets, what am I also going to find out that I need once I take the rear wheel off to stop this sprocket movement? That is, what might be causing this rear sprocket to move like that? Something else back there worn out that needs to be replaced? I'd like to make only one run to the parts shop when I go for the sprockets and chain.

Your five #6 cush rubbers are worn. They can be replaced or shimmed with inner tube rubber for heavy wear or sheet aluminum for light wear. You know it's time to do something if the sprocket carrier will fall out of the wheel from gravity alone if the wheel is held sprocket side down.


Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.

The shimming technique works great, I used an old mountain bike inner tube when I did my 1000.

OK, I shimmed the sprocket carrier's cush rubbers with an old bike inner tube. The carrier actually fell out of the rear wheel by itself when I took the rear wheel out of the swing arm. Now it's snug as a bug in a rug with the shimming. Thanks for the advice.

So, another question, if I may.... I picked up the sprockets and chain. The front sprocket that I picked up does not have the rubber rings on it like the original front sprocket does. The chain is beyond service length so since I'm replacing it, I'm replacing both sprockets. The dealer says that they have no aftermarket options for a front sprocket that has the rubber rings. The dealer said only OEM is that way -- and the price is twice just about any other option they have available.

So, are the rubber rings for noise and vibration dampening? Does it matter if I have a front sprocket with or without the rubber rings? What aftermarket sprocket would have the rubber rings on the sprocket if I wanted to go that route?

I've read JT sprockets will have rubber rings. They are only about noise. Many people have reported not noticing a difference.

Sprocket Center sells sprockets with the rubber damper ring:

SUPERLITE (#28401RD) 525 Pitch Chromoly-Steel Front Sprocket with Rubber Dampener (OEM-style) - DL 1000 V-Strom 2014-2016 - Suzuki - STREET

Google here the pros/ cons of having a sprocket with the damper ring. Different people have apparently different experience.

Do you think my buddy got his money's worth? Honda XR650L with 50K miles on it. He said it started to slip and he couldn't make it up the driveway.
