Broken tab on speed sensor bracket
 
This is driving me crazy. On pg 38 of the user manual, I see a picture of this thing and it's being called the speed sensor bracket (aluminum, just behind the hex-head bolt on the right front fork), HOWEVER, if I look for the part online, I can see it being described as part # 55720-27G00, on Partzilla, as a Front ABS Sensor Bracket. So I don't know WHAT it is! This is my first attempt at changing tires on my bike. In removing the front wheel on my 2008 DL650A, I removed calipers from both sides, loosened pinch bolt on the right, then used the 12mm hex-head ratchet to slowly, carefully unscrew the hub. As the hub turned, the aluminum "speed-or-ABS" sensor bracket slowly turned with it and broke off one of the two top tabs that hold it in place on the front fork (these two tabs nestle around a bump on the inside of the right, front fork). One thing I find interesting is that there are two tabs on the bottom of this bracket as well, but there is no corresponding bump on the inside of the front fork for these bottom tabs, so it seems like Suzuki could have doubled the security of the fitment but did not. Does anybody else have a second bump for the lower tabs?

1. What did I do wrong? Is it common practice to, for example, wedge in a big screwdriver somewhere and hold that while turning the hex head bolt?

2. Is it possible that I can bolt it back up because the tabs are not all that necessary? Or was that a $100 flushing sound that I heard when I turned that hex-head and watched that little tab drop to the floor?

That part number is #9 in the diagram. It holds the front ABS sensor. This pic seems to have a protective cover my bike did not have. It shouldn't turn with the axle. Are you sure the tab wasn't already broken off? That would allow it to turn but it should not stick to the axle. As long as you locate it properly, you can live without the tab.

I upped your status. That is an ABS sensor, not a speed sensor.

Thank you Greywolf. It may have been broken the last time I had tires changed (it was at a shop) and was just "hangin' by a thread" (because I saw the tab fall to the floor after turning the hex-head bolt). I'll be careful in putting it back on, lube around it so it doesn't stick again, and I'll watch for anything unusual. As you can see by the photo I attached, the Owner's Manual calls it a "speed sensor," so that's why I was confused--I didn't know if it had to do with the ABS or the speedometer. I sure do appreciate your response, and I hope you have a wonderful evening.

That "Tab" looks like maybe an after market protector for the ABS sensor behind it. Maybe Touratech or similar producer of custom accessories.
