Price for used stuff

What should the price be for used stuff? I know it depends on the item. Iíve made some offers for used Vstrom stuff at about 50 percent off the new price. Adds donít say firm. Some people get all pissed off, instead of just saying thanks, but no or making a counter offer. One item was still in the box according to seller, but 5 years old and the pics he sent were terrible. I still thought 50 percent off was a good starting point for an offer. Guy got so pissed, he acted like he wanted to fight me and the item had been for sale for over 2 months. Why do people get so offended, itís just an offer.

Depending on the item and/or it's condition, 50% might be too low. There are always those that think they should re-coupe 90% of value and there is not much to be done except throw them and offer.

If I want something used, and the price + shipping is fair compared to new, then I don't even negotiate, I just buy it. If the price is way high I don't even bother making an offer.

You are for sure low balling, but it does depend on item/age/condition/shipping and such. Who cares if somebody gets upset with you, you'll never see them.

50%? If you go off the new retail price, that isn't an offending offer. Going off market price ( what you can actually buy that item new for ) then 50% might be a lowball. All depend on condition and how it ages. Certain things just don't sell well used. But something like the windshield you have been pining for or luggage and brackets to fit your Strom that are in really nice condition are worth more than 50%. But don't forget shipping costs, which are expensive for larger items if you don't have a commercial account. Since most new stuff is now expected to ship for free, that has to be considered into your offer. If it is going to cost $50 to ship a windshield, why pay $120 for it when a new one is $180?

Offering 50% of the new price when something has been for sale for more than a couple weeks isn't unreasonable at all.

Are you silly? I'm still gonna send it.

I'm with you - I usually look for about 50%. Sometimes I've paid more if it's in really good condition and there aren't many available used.

Iím picky about buying used so Iíll look for at most 50%, unless itís something with say 500 miles on it the owner didnít like I could see paying closer to 75% if itís an item that never goes on sale and a local pick up

Thanks for the input everyone. Just to be clear, it was not anyone on this site that got mad at my offers, it was craigslist. I usually just give stuff away or sell it dirt cheap, but maybe thatís why I donít have much, lol. I think I will continue to use 50% off MSRP as a starting point for my offers, unless they say firm. Some people donít mind spending weeks and months selling something, not me, I want it gone now.

In some cases, just because it takes a while to sell something, it doesn't mean the price is too high. It can mean no one looking wants it, unless it's cheap. Some higher price items do need to wait on someone who is really looking for it, not just a crowd who will take it off your hands for less than it's worth. I think it varies from item to item, the people involved and timing. I've sold many things at 50% or less, but if it was almost new or unused by me, I've asked closer to what it actually cost. That buyer usually comes along.

Like the others, used is used and 50% is a reasonable offer.
I've made low ball on most of the stuff I found here and most guys counter offer and we come to a price the seller will accept and I buy the item.
Some folks think their lead is gold and have a hard time parting with unwanted stuff.
Other times I know the price is already great and send my paypal right away and forget to give them my address. I just get too excited sometimes.
