I've been looking for a top case for the Vee and I prefer the look
of some of the Pelican cases. What size or model of pelican case
are you using for a top case. If anyone has a pick of their mounted case,
it would help. Thanks!
I chose a Pelican 1550 as a top case, mostly because a friend gave me one. For mounting, I bought a luggage rack and detachable hardware kit from Caribou. I had to mix/match the included hardware with the stock pieces as well as buy a few pieces before it all worked as I desired on my '12 DL650. I redrilled the mounting holes in the rack to locate it 1.5" further back. I'm very happy with it and it is easily removed by releasing 4 quarter-turn fasteners inside the box. This allows the use of the stand-alone luggage rack. My wife uses the case as a backrest as well. The only downside I can think of is that it is pretty heavy. I can't post pics from my phone, but will try to upload some later from my PC.
My free Pelican case ended up costing me some $ once I discovered the Caribou web site. Luggage rack, detatch kit, carry bag liner, Rok straps, and Rok strap tie-down brackets. We went on a camping trip last weekend and used the Rok straps to hold tent, etc on top of the case. Worked great.
wifey's bike has these installed as sidecases. They're pretty great, my only complaint is that the previous owner bought safety yellow. Don't do that. :yikes:
I just bought a set and installed them last week, as side cases. I used to have the Seahorse 720s and I would say quality-wise, the Seahorse and the Pelican are a step up. That said, these are still nice, especially for the money. They are still pretty rigid. My only complaint is the back is a little bowed in from the molding process, but not that much. It would just have been nice if the back of the case was completely flat. Not a huge issue.
The larger ones (what I got) are pretty good sized and would make a good top box if you don't care about putting a helmet in there. Mine fit one-gallon paint cans standing upright with the lid closed to give you an idea of the depth.
I posted in the luggage pictures thread, but you'll have to click a photobucket link to see them.
I think you should try painting yours before you get rid of them just because of the color.
I believe the one I put on my bike is the Pelican 1300. It may be smaller than what you want, but it works well for me. I have a phone charger in it and it's good for all the junk I want to have handy when I stop - phone, wallet, glasses, hat, etc. plus I keep my insurance and registration, spare flashlight, padlock in it. Probably some other stuff that I can't remember or don't want to mention
The duratools(the bigger one) at that link are on backorder until 15June, and I can't seem to find the bigger bag anywhere else in my google-machine. Yall know of anywhere else to get 'em?
So I used the Krylon Fusion. It looks pretty OK, we'll see how durable it is. If this doesn't work I'll try the bedliner stuff. After thinking on it, I couldn't justify getting rid of em just because they are a wonky color.
I would, though, love to get one of the Duratool boxes as a topcase.
I'll post pics once I get them mounted. I'm adding some u-bolts for tie down points. Thanks folks!
edit --although, that 1300 looks taller, which would make a good backrest for my son. So many choices. LOL
Good looking ride and color coordinated to boot. Excellent product and should last a long time without problems.
