600 Mile Maintenance

I'm a new 650 V-Strom owner, but a long time motorcyclist, and currently have 3 other running motorcycles. I do all of my own general maintenance and adjustments on the other cycles and plan on doing it on the V-Strom as well. I am writing this inquiry because the dealer was quite adamant about the necessity of a dealer doing the 600 mile maintenance to keep the warranty valid. The 600 mile maintenance appears to be nothing more than a general inspection, adjustments, and oil/filter change. Did those of you who do your own maintenance do the 600 mile maintenance yourself or have the dealer do it? Thanks in advance for any feedback.

I did my first service with the help of a genunie suzuki manual, service included the obvious oil, filter change and also torqueing certain fastners including a steering head bearing tension adjustment, and to vee owners the important tbs adjustment.Only found one fastner slightly lose and tbs off 1/8 turn.Have read here your legalley allowed to preform your own services be advised to save your reciepts.

 Get the manual and do it yourself. I too had a couple of loose fasteners. One was a front header screw. It took be a few months to get to the rear but it was torqued properly. The manual has a table of fastener to check. I write the size wrench on the page. Maintenance is relaxing for me. The closest dealer is almost and hour away and I would have to drop it off and leave it and get pick ed up.

You cannot be forced into having the dealer perform the service.

It is a new bike, I took mine to the dealer for the 600 service and have done oil changes & chain adjusting myself since then. I figure the dealer may know more about the new to me bike than I do. I also bought a new rear tire through the dealer when I found him to be competative.

I do not have a problem with my dealer. I recognize they are in business (as I once was) and as a result they need to charge for what they sell and any service they provide. The employees at the dealership do not work for free, the cost of the building is not free, nor are insurance, utilities, etc. I do not begrudge the dealer charging me.

Now sit back and wait for the dealer bashing. I'm off to make some popcorn.

DIY does not void warranty, but it does make it awful hard to collect on a warranty claim. When you do drop your bike off at a dealer for warranty claim do you think they are going to fight as hard with Suzuki NA if they are not doing the work

Dealers don't just do the work, warranty work has to be approved by Suzuki NA first

without using a dealer, how are you going to make the claim ? sue Suzuki in court ?

I will NOT void the warranty! However if something does happen that may be related to you servicing the bike and requiring warranty replacement it can give them a cause not to cover it. Only if they can prove you were not knowledgeable to do the work yourself, they wont cover it.

PacMan, read your warranty paperwork about the required work and see if it says anything about being required to return to the dealer for anything other than warranty claims. If you have time, ask the dealer service writer to show you where it says that the stealership must do the 600 mile service.

1st service

Picked up my new 2012 glee today, asked owner about first service, he said around 500 miles and you can arrange to do it while you wait and will give you a Hyabusa to pass the time with :yesnod:

This is a small dealer, not a steeler and they treated me well, so I will pay them do the first service and build a re pore with them and should there be any problems with the bike they will help me out. If you don't support your local dealer they may not be there to long.

If the dealer would lend me a motorcycle while they perform service I would probably take it in more often, since I wouldn't have to mess with getting a ride.

My local dealer seems to be above board. I have done my own maint for over 30k on my 2011 wee. I could not see paying the $$ for the 600 mile service. For some it would give good piece of mind to let the dealer check it over. I remember I had to adjust chain, change oil, and check all of the fasteners. I would find another dealer though. It sounds like your dealer is shady.

When I picked up my new Vee I just had to acknowledge the first service had to be done.

I took it in last week to get the ECM replaced. While it was there I decided to get the first service done, minus oil change as I had already done it.

Price was very reasonable and they got me out of there in good time. No complaints.
