Hello all, I just purchased a 2006 VEE and am looking to add more cargo space. As well as do what the wise people of the forum have suggested start farkleing.
As I was looking at all the cool Pelican box mods and the various luggage options I said to myself, self I wonder if the big square panniers interfere with passenger comfort. My wife loves to ride with me.
I need advice on this topic. Has anyone experienced positive or negative passenger comfort comments with larger box type panniers. If you could let me know what your set up is I would be grateful.
If mounted properly, they are not in the way at all. I used a proprietary set up by Caribou but there is another thread here on a more economical and nicely done set up.
Then make sure they are removable. Not camping - no hard cases. Get top box move-back pate so you can have a top box and there is plenty of seat room for the pillion.
Agreed -- if they're mounted properly, not an issue. My wife actually feels more secure somehow with the bags in place.
She does scrape her boot across the bags pretty much every time, but then again so do I. Not really an issue unless you're totally anal-retentive about cosmetics or you have color-matched painted bags or something weird like that.
You might want to put your wife on the bike wearing her normal riding gear and take a few photos and measurements to make sure you don't mount the bags in such a way that they interfere.
I just mounted a new set of box luggage today and pretty much used the centerline of the Givi rack for fore and aft. I don't carry a passenger, but it looks like only the arch of someone's boot would fit on the pegs, if that. The boxes are 22" long though.
My bike came with the fully adjustable passenger pegs that Twisted Throttle sells. So that could be an option to get the exactly where she want them, they rotate 360 and they offer different length extensions. This way she can fine tune where she wants her feet. And as stated above my wife feels secure nestled inside the big Givi's.
One thing to consider is that the Jesse Odyssey II bags I have can be adjusted fore and aft...slide them rearward for more passenger room, or forward and down for 1-up riding!

my comments are in regard to Caribou/Pelican 1550 cases
the side cases do restrict footroom behind the passenger pegs but not problematic
the handles work will for passenger grab handles
