Chain Adjustment

Just a quick question or three! I'm going to pick up an '08 Wee and am riding it home immediately 400 miles. Can you tell me what the forum recommended chain slack is and what size wrenches I'll need to loosen the axle and turn the adjusters? From the pictures I've seen it has the castellated nut and split pin. The bike doesn't have the factory tool kit, I've already been told that.

Thanks!

The rear axle has a 22mm hex head and a 24mm nut. I don't know about the adjuster offhand but you should get a full hex key set anyway. Apply anti seize to the threads to prevent galling. The manual says you want 0.8"-1.2" of slack at the midpoint of the lower chain run measured on the side stand at the tightest point in the chain run. Use more if measured on a center stand. Looser won't hurt anything but tighter can cause real damage.

So the axle has to be held at one end to loosen the nut at the other? Curious. The Tiger axle is locked into the side adjustment plate and just the nut is turned to enable wheel movement. Does the factory tool kit come with both wrenches? I'll carry some anti-seize! Great forum here!!

V-Stroms have more suspension travel than most streetbikes, so the chains need to run a bit looser than you may be used to. Even the manual's 0.8 inch minimum is pretty damn tight -- most of us run a good bit looser

Unless the chain is just completely and utterly roached, the chain adjustment isn't going to change in 400 miles. Just eyeball that it's got at least an inch of slack and something less than three or four inches and ride the thing home.

Sound advice. The present owner has only had the bike about 5 months and hasn't put very many miles on it and I suspect hasn't done much, if any, maintenance either hence my concern.
