Besteem vs GIVI mounting

I have a GIVI mount for a top box already on my 05 Wee. I haven't run a top box before because I have never had one. But I was thinking of getting one for this bike as it would seem to be handy for trowing my laptop in etc.

My question is seeing the Besteem mounting plate http://www.stromtrooper.com/dl650-2012/77552-bestem-929-top-case-2012-vstrom-adventure.html
It looks to be very similar to the GIVI. If this is true could I just buy the 929 and use it on the existing plate?

My other question is does the Besteem come with the plate if the GIVI plate doesn't work. And is there that much of a difference in the two brands?

Thanks

The Bestem comes with a steel mounting plate. If you use the Bestem plate, you may need to modify the location of some of the holes, so it is handy to have a dremel and drill. GIVI makes several different style mounting plates for their topcases, so not sure which one you have. I had a Bestem as a top case and it was very good and did not leak.

This is what I am looking at. Seems to have the backrest and LED light included. Which are both extras on the GIVI and way cheaper. I like the quick detachable thing with the GIVI and since I had the mount already I thought it would be good to get the GIVI but dang that's more than twice the price for a very similar setup if I get the Besteem.

I suppose I can keep the GIVI mount until I decide if I like the Besteem and sell it later if I get tired of having it around.

The latching mechanism is different but Bestem does send a plate with the box so it's no biggie. As others have said, you may have to drill/dremel some to get it to mount tight.

You guys were exactly right. The Besteem seems to have very similar mounting to the GIVI but the latch is the opposite of the GIVI. Not that I have messed with the GIVI other than the mount but to release it it looks like you'd have to push a button where the besteem you pull to release. Seems solid enough.

Gonna try to get it mounted up today and see how it looks. So far I like it. The box seems nice for the money for sure. I have to remove my rack to get the GIVI mount off and then decide how to mount the Besteem. My biggest complaint so far is that the mount is a bit heavy.

I think I could have modified the GIVI to work. But don't see a need unless I just hate the mount.

Ok after much back and forth with myself over the Besteem bracket and how to mount it I started looking at the GIVI mount. It is a much cleaner mount IMO. They both work the same with the box on. But with it off the GIVI just plane looks nicer. So I decided to see if they were anywhere close and of the GIVI mount could be modified. Well it is pretty simple actually. I measured the Besteem mount and just drilled a couple holes. Basically the Besteem looks like a GIVI copy with the latch on the other side. So I cut the hole out for the latch on that side and then filed it to shape. now it looks like this

I worried a little about making the latch area weak but it looks strong enough and it has radius's at the corners so it should be fine. Time will really tell.

worst case I still have to mount the Besteem one but off the bike it seems to work great. So I put the brackets for the GIVI back on the V-Strom Rack and will install it in a few.

The Bonus is if I ever end up with a GIVI I can just put it on there.

Ok I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I wired up the light tonight and added a flasher. So it flashes 3-4 times and then goes solid when the brake is applied. I may add some LEDs to the red strip around the box as a running light eventually. For now I will see how the GIVI mod holds up. My guess is its will be fine. Anyway this is how it turned out
