Well...they are brighter, this price is very good, and they will have a shorter life.
There are four ways to get more light out of a bulb at the same wattage (which is electrical consumption, not brightness).
--More precise placement of the filament in the exact optical center of the reflector (costs more to make)
--Better mixture of gases in the bulb (costs more)
--Burn the filament hotter (shorter bulb life)
--Arrange the filament so the light is concentrated in a bright spot on the road which is where the greater light output is measured (bogus and widely used)
Lights are made to be whiter by the hotter filament and by a blue dye on the bulb which actually decreases light output.
So, yes, these GE Nighthawk Platinum bulbs are brighter, are whiter, and will have a shorter life than standard bulbs. Here is how one top vendor (candlepower.com) describes a similar bulb from Philips: Here are the latest new ultra high performance headlight bulbs for you from Philips. The Xtreme Power bulbs give an enormous improvement in beam focus and formation. They put up to 80% more bright white light in the beam's hot spot so your beams reach out further down the road — wider, too, for easier seeing in turns and on curvy roads. They're made with the world's most precisely wound and accurately placed filament coil in a compact, AR-treated optical quartz envelope. Xenon, krypton, and other noble gases are included in the newly-reformulated fill gas.
