FZ1 rider considering big Strom

Hey guys. My name's Dan, age 27, air traffic controller from Cleveland, OH. I currently ride a 2002 Yamaha FZ1. I'm 6'6", 210 lbs so my choices in "sport" motorcycles are very limited. Mainly the reason why I chose the FZ1 in the first place. It's a wonderful bike for most things, however I'm starting to lean more towards the touring side of sport touring, and a recent issue of Motorcyclist magazine got me considering the big 'Strom (the article about the Iron Butt ride one of the editors did on the DL) I wanted to get some opinions from the congregation about selling my FZ for the 'Strom. Anyone have any experience with both? I've always been intrigued by a V-twin sport, and I almost bought the SV1000S when I got the FZ, but it was just too uncomfortable. I'm struggling to find a very comfortable setup on the FZ, and I do remember sitting on the big DL once and thinking wow, this bike is really good for someone as tall as I am.

HELP! I can't decide what to do!

it's a good sized bike with excellent power that fits taller folk fairly well stock. A few simple modifications can make
it even better:
-switch to tall touring seat (adds about an inch of height)
-lower the pegs (motorcycle larry or vario adjustable)
-add crashbar w/ highway pegs (twisted throttle)
Right about now you likely could get a killer good deal on a left over '06.

Any differences in the years? I'm more partial to buying used, anything I need to know? It seems the only changes are colors, and maybe the windscreen? Does one model year have an adjustable windscreen, or does it just look that way?

The DL1k hasn't changed in years...even though I was hoping we'd get an ABS flavor for 2007. It's perfect for tall people and there are lot of options for comfort. The windscreen is 3-position adjustable, but that isn't a problem once you add a Madstad bracket.

I believe the adjustablity came in with the Wee in the '04 model year. Otherwise, colors. 'Considered to be fairly bullet proof so used should be fine assuming they didn't get too playful.

I am 6'6", 230lbs and the reason I bought the Vstrom was the comfort for my size. I've done 500 mile days with no problems with legs or back. It has good ergonomics and is a blast to ride.

I believe the earlier Vstroms ('02-'03) did not have an adjustable windscreen. Some bikes have a low RPM cough due to lean condition in the FI. That can be fixed several different ways (I'm running a PCIII <powercommander 3 USB>) and there is alot of info on this site about that. Good luck with your decision!

Here is the ultimate Big and Tall bike... ATV high bars, custom tall seat, lower pegs, higway pegs, tall windshield with lamiar lip and shorter link to raise the bike.

It was a small change, but it has been well received by most who see it.

FYI, I ride with a some BMW's guys and I smile when other BMW owners ask what year and model my (BMW) is! After I explain, they make positive comments about the look (so I guess all vstrom are NOT ugly) and are most impress with the room/seating position. The guys with the twin boxer engines generally comment how they like the sound of stock mufflers and are very-very impress with the "after-burner" torque.

A dealership in Columbus has several new 05's and 06's on the floor. Blue and red respectively. I believe they also have 2 black 05's at their East Side location.
