Overdrive light flashing in 5th.

Anybody run across this, I was cruising this afternoon in 5th at about 4000-4500 rpm and I glanced down and saw the od indicator flashing, I thought maybe I was low revving 6th but I was pretty sure I was in 5th, kicked it up to sixth and the indicator came on solid.

Any feedback on this?

Thanks in advance.

The OD is displayed according to the voltage level in the wire from the gear position switch. If the resistance goes up in a contact or the resistor in the switch pack goes out of spec, what you saw can happen.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

Had the same problem.

My '03 Vee was doing this for a while. OD light would come on in 4th or 5h, flicker for a bit, then go out.

Dunno what happened, but the problem has resolved itself.

I chalk it up to demons. Yea, Satan has imbued his evil self into my shift position indicator.

Perhaps an exorcism would be appropriate. Is there a Preist, Rabbi, Imam, or Voodoo Queen who could help?

There's added resistance somewhere in the circuit. Lots of DL1Ks do this eventually. My guess is that gunk builds up on the contacts.

Since the actual sensor is buried in the engine behind the clutch and I absolutely hate that stupid ^%$#@! furshlugginger bright green light, even if it works, I installed an Ivan's "TRE" and now ride sans OD light.

It's not technically a "TRE", since it's not responsible for changing timing (only altering RPM limits and possibly throttle response) but that's what the squidly crowd calls all such widgets.

Basically, it fools the bike into thinking it's in 4th gear at all times (since 4th is unrestricted, while 5th and 6th are restricted) yet allows the neutral signal to come through when you're in neutral. As a welcome side effect, the cursed OD light ceases to interrupt your late night highway Zen with it's obnoxious bright green glow.

You can find diagrams on that other V-Strom site for building a similar circuit yerdamself, but I never could get this to work right. Perhaps my electro-fu is weak.

I tell ya. my OD light is all over the place... Comes on 4th, 5th, 6th. Somtimes goes off in 6th.... If I ever do the clutch basket mod that would be the time ti change it out.... I wonder if it is possable to just unplug it???

Seems to do it more in wet weather for me.

I might get around to doing something about it when I get around to doing something about the top fuel guage bar refusing to cooperate.

Probably though, replacing the foot peg I busted off today will satisfy my urge to do something to the bike.

Add me to the list. When it flickers I know Im in 5th. When it stays on solid I know I am in 6th. Luckily somewhere along the way the bright green light was replaced by a dull gray LCD readout for 2007's.

my 04 has never came on any time, I can see the light spot if the sun is right, never lights up. Is this only on the vee's? not the wee's?

I have an '06 and I have the LCD.

I'm interested in the faux TRE if it limits restrictions on the power I might want on tap.
