WABDR and the 650

One word BURTAL! The 650 suspension in terrible in these conditions, the motor is pretty good. I expected the stock suspension to be bad but holy crap, way too soft and no damping doesn't help. We did everything up to Cashmere and then gave up because the map sucks, not nearly enough detail to be able to use the map only which is bad to have to rely on the GPS only, if you had a back you would be fine to be able to connect the roads together, one section was not even on the map and there are so many little off shoots you could end up going the wrong way, I can tell you that the BMW GS1200's were working pretty well that our friends had, I guess you get what you pay for, all in all we had a good time though and we are going to go back to finish it so I better do something with my suspension first

Ah, that's too bad. I upgraded from Wee to Glee but could keep the Wee around and upgrade the suspension and rip the extras off. Or trade her for an XR or other lighter dual sport.

I can say for sure that the 2012/Glee's stock suspension works better offroad.

A friend and I have been planning the WABDR but definitely looking at navigation aids to avoid wasting time.

Good to know...I'm planning on doing the WABDR in the next couple of years. I've already started tweaking my suspension in preparation, as the rest of the wee is almost ready to go.

Ground clearance was an issue, my brand new SW Motec skid plate is junk now, why they rivet instead of weld I have no idea, my buddies Trax box mounts tore right out and the rivets let go.
If i was going to get a bike for this it would be a KTM 690, 990 or a BMW GS800. IF you are going to put along at a slow pace it would be fine but if you want to hammer along at speed the 650 stock suspension is not going to work.
There is quite a bit of road riding so have a bike that is comfy is good.
I'm used to riding my Husky WR250 where I can react to the conditions the V isn't able to do that, I can keep the front wheel out of the holes but the rear still slams hard.
As far as nav goes, down load the tracks for the GPS but if you get a back roads map and get the WABDR map you would be fine, even my maps in my iPhone had all the road #'s on it when I looked it up at the hotel over WiFi
