Smoke Hole Canyon, WV?

I just heard about a road in WV at Smoke Hole Canyon that's supposed to be really nice so I am going to head up there this weekend and give it a try. I was wondering if anyone else has ridden it? County Road 28/11 I believe. Also I have planned to camp at either Seneca Shaows, Seneca State Forest or Spruce Knob and was wondering if anyone else has ever used any of those campgrounds or something else in the vicinity?

I was there a few years ago with the Road Toads.. it is a pretty area to ride and I think lots to explore. We didn't camp as it was part of our route down to Deals Gap but I remember that I really loved it.

There is not much in the way of camping in the area. Probably staying in a room in Franklin WV is something to consider, while scenic beauty is everywhere this ain't a tourist trap so don't expect a McDonalds around every turn. DEFINITELY ride to Spruce Knob! Two main ways to get there, the Franklin side and the Elkins side as we locals used to know them as ( yes, I grew up in Buckhannon, WV ). The Franklin side is paved all the way and fun on a bike in that there are a few nice curves. The Elkins side is MUCH longer and has a LOT of gravel road. Stop by Spruce knob lake if you go the Elkins route. I usually go in one way and out the other!

Back to camping, there are some free of charge primitive sites on the Glady river, turn in at the lodge at Alpena to access those. This is not far from Elkins and some good turns on old rt 33.

Smoke Hole is sort of northeast of Seneca and Spruce knob. If you have a chance run rt 33 towards Elkins. There are some good side roads if you like that kind of exploring also.

If you are heading north toward Maryland by chance, do not miss Scher Mountain. One of the best sets of twisties in the state. Can't remember the route off the top of my head, might be 42, but it is the main road south of Mt Storm.

Ahhhh, the memories are coming back........

After riding it last fall, I strongly resisted the urge to sell everything, close my business, get a divorce and move there and simply spend all day riding from one end of Smoke Hole Road to the other. You won't be disappointed.

I have camped at Seneca Shadows and it is really scenic. I camped in the back at the walk-in sites, which is tent only primitive camping. When I was there this Spring we had the place to ourselves, but I doubt you will get that luxury. It really is in the shadows of Seneca Rocks.

Smoke Hole is a good ride that you should not pass up, but as I recall it is pretty narrow with some broken up pavement, so don't expect a high speed peg dragging road.

Thanks everyone. The bike is all packed and I'm going to head out early in the morning. By the way, if you ever see me dragging a peg, it's because my bike is laying on its side!!

Smoke hole and Seneca

It is gorgeous out that way. I head out to Germany Valley (on the other side of the mountain from Smoke Hole, near Seneca) fairly often to go caving and have ridden there a couple times on the new wee already. On the way out there, make sure you do NOT get onto corridor H and instead take "Old RT. 55". Corridor H (I don't think it is labeled as such on any maps) is a large highway they built to make the trip through the hills much quicker, but the old road is still down below it and is much more beautiful.

If you take RT. 55 west from Strasburg, you will go through Wardensville, and right on after you go through the town you will see signs for "Old RT. 55" and you want to follow those (if you hit the four lane highway you just missed it). I think you need to make a couple turns to stay on that road, but they should all be marked and it will take you all the way to Moorefield.

I would offer to join you if I wasn't already busy this weekend around here. I have access to a couple field houses, one of which is in Smoke Hole Gorge, so I haven't camped out there to provide any input.

ENJOY!

Enjoy, looks like a nice day. Although I've ridden in that area for years, I never hit that road until someone showed it to me two months ago. Can't believe I've been missing it all this time. It's fantastic.

Just rode it. Found the only place within miles with Sprint coverage! Nice ride, beautiful views especially along the river. Not much traffic on it today, I'm going to ride it tomorrow morning in the way back home. I'm staying at Seneca Shadows. It's a nation park campground. Nice, with showers! $19/night
