No Start problem

I may have posted this in the wrong spot originally, so i thought id repost it here in General...

First, if this has been covered, point me to the right search criteria, as I had no luck using search.

So, with Phx being in triple digits lately, I dont usually ride when its above 105degrees outside. The bike has been sitting for the past 2 months. I have taken it out around the neighborhood a couple of times though and have had no starting problems. This morning, I decided to ride to work. I started it up, like I usually do:

Key on
Wait for FI pump to cycle (and gauges to sweep)
starter switch on (its usually left on)
Clutch in
press start button
smile at the Dale Walker rumble
Enjoy

I then realized I hadnt put my work bag (laptop and stuff) in my topbox. I switched the key off, stowed my stuff, and went through the same process. Except, this time when I turned the key on, I was impatient, and didnt wait for the pump to cycle, or even for the gauges to finish sweepingf, I pulled in the clutch, and hit the starter button. The FI pump stopped, the sweeping stopped, everything shut off.

NOW, turning the key on doesnt do anything. no lights, no FI pump, no gauge sweep..nothing. its almost like a fuse or circuit breaker popped. I checked the fuse panel with the small fuses. all good. BAttery has 12.8 volts. the big 30 amp fuses in the junction box (clear cover?) are both good.

Im a pretty good wrench, but I hate Electrical. Its like the key switch is suddenly bad as nothing comes on....Any ideas?

If there is no CHEC or FI appearing, try tightening the battery cables at both ends of each cable.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.

Actually, when you turn the key on...nothing happens. Nothing at all. no lights, no messages, no FI pump..though the clock is still set.

That's most likely a bad battery or battery connection.

Normally, I would say I agree with you, but in this case it had just started, just fine, 30 seconds previously, and on several occasions in the past few months, plus the battery reads 12.8 volts....

Just check the battery connections for gosh sakes. You asked for help and now you want to argue?

That's typical for a battery or connection problem. Things are fine until a threshold is reached. Then the high current draw causes an arc and the arc kills the connection or the battery.

That's what I meant to say but am too impatient or politically incorrect to say it in such a nice way. Wow, maybe I need to chill...dude, better take a break,...be right back.

YUPP, exactly how mine died. Started fine. Forgot wallet. Turned off and when tried to restart....dead. Showed 12.7 or so volts, hit starter with VOM leads on battery, zap...less than a volt. Recheck...12.7 volts.

Spare battery confirmed the diagnosis I didn't believe either.

ok, so I checked all the connections. I removed the cables from the battery and re-attached. I removed the positive side from the junction block (Clear cover?) and re-attached. All of the connections were clean with not a spot of corrosion. Still, when I turn the key on, I get nothing on the dash. no FI pump, no Gauge sweep, no headlights..nada
