front end wobble

I went camping over the weekend, 300 plus miles and on the way home I noticed a bad, no a violent front end wobble, only at 35 mph. A little faster or slower and all is good. Now, I have to have a very relaxed grip or take my hands off the bars to feel it but it is a bit unerving. What could cause this all of a sudden? Only 3,000 miles on tires and nothing visibly wrong.

Tire wear can do it. So can loose or worn steering head bearings.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.

There is a Google "Custom Search" dialog box near the masthead of this forum. Access it, and type in, "Decel Wobble", "Wee Wobble", or just plain, "My Bike Wobbles".

You will find a host of other riders who have experienced this very same issue. You will also find a host of solutions as how to cure it; make it go away.

Personally, I am very strongly opinionated that, your stem head bearings are too loose. Countless times, this very same topic has arisen on this forum. For those that have been brave enough to check the tension of their steering head bearings, nearly ALL of them have reported that the tensioning nut was just "finger tight", even though the locking nut, was very tight on top of the tensioning nut.

You mention you were camping, is it possible the extra weight of your gear caused this. Did you crank up the rear preload after adding the extra weight? Did the bike continue to do this even after the gear was unloaded?

stering head bearing

I wonder how many years or miles it takes for that bearing to get some "slop' in it

Most often none at all. They are set too loose from the factory. I had a tire wobble on my DL1000 and put the tapered steering head bearings in and set the tension. The wobble was gone and I have not even felt a hint of it. At first the bearings were a little tight so I loosened them just a bit more and they are perfect.

If you have the wobble with any tire tighten your bearings!

I Have the same issue with the 2005 Wee project bike I just purchased. I think its the steering head being loose just haven't got around to checking it yet. Let us know what you find.

The tightness of the steering stem bearing is tough to quantify. My '04 met the spec when the front end was pulled around with a spring scale and there was no wobble to feel when it was on the stand, but that bike gave a new meaning to "adventure" riding when going fast downhill in a crosswind. I tightened the bearing by feel, and the bike became stable and secure. These bearings must not be used as a damper, and must not be tightened so much that resistance to turning is felt, but the bike can't ride right if they're loose.

I would you "step out on a limb" and agree with me that what the manual specs for the proper adjustment, is too loose?

This is what I have been trying to get across to folks. BEFORE anyone spends money on a corrective solution, (new tires, steering dampener, or even on the tapered roller bearing upgrade that I encourage riders to make.), I want people to try applying a little more tension to the stem bearings.

I pulled a search and wow, alot of folks with an issue like this. I will check the steering head bearing tightness. I must say though, it seems odd that all is good one minute and then I have a wobble seemingly out of the blue, Only 10K on this DL 1000
