Schuberth are fine helmets. WebBikeworld describes the C3 internal shape as slightly round. If that matches your head, great (it's not right for me).
About top line helmets...well, they might be safer. The company making them might take more care (expense) in quality control and superior design to exceed the test minimums. DOT certification is self-certification. Even if the helmets pass the lab tests once, they might not in the future if something changes, maybe even including the temperature inside the factory. Re-testing is not required to continue DOT certification, nor is testing done by the DOT.
My new Arai Signet-Q (long oval internal shape) is my first premium helmet, and it is the most comfortable helmet I've had yet.
