Rode a Tiger 800 today

A diehard Triumph buddy of mine just traded in his Sprint on a used 2011 Tiger this past weekend. He had the bike at work today and allowed me to go for a ride with it. It is a nice bike, and like every bike, it has its plusses and minuses. That said, I will be staying with my Wee.

What I liked:
Smooth, great sounding engine with LOTS of low-end torque and plenty of power for passing or getting up to speed.

Very well balanced--easy to maneuver and keep my feet on the pegs at very slow speeds without much effort.

Refined ride and fitment of parts.

It **feels** like it would be easy to have a lot of fun with off-road, although I did not take it off road.

What I did not like:
The heat being thrown off the engine, especially on the right side. It was only in the low 80s here today too--not even really that hot.

The seat does not do it for me. I will admit though that I may be getting spoiled by my recently acquired Russell Day Long.

The apparent range given the size of the gas tank, which looks like it will be a bit less than what one would get on the Wee.

Jury is out on:
ABS braking.

The speedometer menu seems unnecessarily complex. I asked my buddy how many miles were on it. He could not remember and so tried to get it to display on the speedo, but finally gave up stating he hadn't figured that one out yet.

Anyway, that's it in a nutshell. I got my 09 Wee new for 7k OTD and I have no desire to spend 11k on a new Tiger 800. IMHO, the Wee is honestly more bang for the buck. Of course, YMMV.

I test rode a Tiger 800 a couple of times as I was tempted but could not get over the heat being thrown off by the engine. But is was really smooth and the sound. No comparison. Still sticking with the Wee.

I've heard that Triumph is going after the BMW 800GS market. Apparently they got it right in the engine heat department. The heat coming off my 800 ST is enough to make wearing
jeans or thin pant garment a bad thing. In the Aerostitch I don't notice it.
It do be HOT!
I rode in 100+ degrees last week end wearing a pair of Belstaff cordura pants and I was fine on the Wee.

I test rode one also. A nice bike, but the range is a total fail. Adventure touring bikes with less than 200 mile range may work in Europe, but in America or Canada I can ride 200 miles and not see another person let alone a gas station.

I have ridden a Tiger 800 (standard, not the XC). The triple is very smooth compared to the DL1k. It feels like a smaller bike. Also, as I still have my Thruxton, I ride with other Triumph owners. I understand that some of them have a stalling issue (at least the first run did) but it sounds like that was resolved pretty quickly.

I went with a DL1k because, buying used, I got a LOT of bike for the money and so far, I don't regret it one bit! It's like I found a 1/2 price sale on adventure bikes!

Hmmm, I hadn't heard that before. That's a shame, because I was considering one of those as a Wee replacement down the road.
Excess heat from the all the big sport tourers is one of things that led to me getting the Strom. We had 60 days of 100+ last summer, so a bike that throws off a ton of heat ain't gonna cut it for me.

I rode an XC last summer. Nice bike, but not $11k nice.

I don't care for the triple sound very much, but a speed triple with an arrow pipe sounds pretty cool.

2012 Suzuki DL650AL2, over 45k miles already!
