Almost Pulled the Trigger....

Was out and about today in my dually, and drove by a local stealer. Stopped by to check his wares, and saw he had a DL1000 with full baggage on the floor. Checked it out, salesman walks over dragging his knuckles. I ask him about a test ride, he says I can't, unless I buy one. So I say let's go, you rig financing and I'll refinace it later. Guy's jaw drops, he starts me out, gets the approval back, and thyen I ask about what happens if I don't like it, just bring it back for a full refund? No, you can't do that. What happens if I don't like it or it's not comfortable? Sell it back for the loss, or private sale.

No thnaks, I'll pass.....and out I walk. 4 saleman now standing there with jaws dragging the floor.......

Funny they'd do that. Used to be the only way you could get a demo ride (at least around here) was to "buy" the bike, with the caveat that you could return it if you rode it and didn't like it.

What was the "out the door" price, if you don't mind my asking?

Go hakafugu yourself.

Around here it is about 50/50.some will let you ride before and some don't.But almost all will let you ride a used bike first.I rode a used one before I bought my 1000,I hated the dealer but they were $2000 lower than anybody else so I bought it.Funny thing, that MEGA dealer is now a 100,000 sqft EMPTY building!!.

Some dealers up here do a kind of rental program - you can get the bike for 24 hours/500kms for $200.00 (price depends on dealer). If you like it, the $200.00 comes off the purchase of the bike, if not then it stays on your credit card.

Only seen it at 2 dealers... wish more would do something link that.

I've found that the dealers selling Japanese bikes don't have demo bikes, but the Harley dealers and most of the European (Triumph, Ducati, BMW) DO have demo units that you can take for a spin. Then the next year you can buy their demo bike for a good discount with a full warranty.

One exception I should mention: If you go to Daytona races in the Spring pretty much anyone that makes bikes will be there with a demo of every model they make.

That has been my exact experience. By way of example, my neighbor purchased his 2010 Triumph Thunderbird demo bike in 2011. All of the touring goodies were already installed. He got a great price and full warranty, and is on record as the first titled owner.

When I asked the local Jap dealers about the absence of new model demo bikes, the usual reply was that the finance company that owned the floor stock disallowed test rides. Delivery of a new motorcycle to the first owner required that the odometer have no more miles than what was evident when the bike left the factory. Where used bikes (i.e., trade-ins) were concerned, most Jap dealers would allow you to take one out for a brief spin.

The local H-D dealers are very accommodating, where test rides are concerned. The company's boutiques (they can't properly be called showrooms) are very relaxed and welcoming, as are the staff. A hearty Well Done! to the Motor Company -- their efforts have paid off. It's too bad that I'm just not attracted to their products at this time.

The local shops here have demo days from time to time, but the HD dealer has a sign on EVERY SINGLE BIKE that reads: "Please do not sit on the bikes." Some even say, "Do not touch." That's not a problem for me, since I've "been there, done that" and won't be buying a HD. When I did, I went to the Louisville HD dealer that had signs posted: "Sit on every one you want until you find the one you like." I never asked about demo ride but I did buy from them. Hell, they were even open on Sunday, for your convenience. Nice guys too. But that's another story. I love my Wee.

Does Suzuki run corporate demo days in the US? I know they do in Canada and the schedule is supposed to be published around the end of April. I was able to ride a new 2011 DL650 last summer in a Brampton group ride for 45 minutes and this allowed me to really get a feel for the bike.
Something to consider for american neighbours that live near a border town where the demo day will be running. You need to have a full valid motorcycle license but I see no reason why they would not accept an american license.

I just bought a used 2007 DL1k a couple of weeks ago. I still have my Triumph Thruxton. I agree, Triumph dealerships are very liberal with allowing test rides. So is it a coincidence that Triumph has actually seen an increase in sales while most other companies were in the past couple of years?

Without the test ride, I would very likely not have a Thruxton right now. I was set on a Ducati Monster, but when I rode the Thruxton, I couldn't leave without it.

While I was trying to decide on my next bike (which is now the DL1k), I rode all kinds of bikes, different styles. Harley let me ride several models, all over 16K. I went to the Suzuki/Yamaha/Honda dealer and they wouldn't let me take out an M109 leftover from the previous year, that was listed about $5k cheaper? I discounted it immediately, knowing my cruiser choice was between an HD and a Triumph. But I ended up going a different way.

Demos sell bikes.
