Greetings i am a new member and owner

Hello i just purchased a 2003 Suzuki Vstrom DL1000. I am enjoying the MC but just wondering if the clunk i am experiencing when shifting into overdrive is normal or something i should be concerned about. Any insight would be appreciated. Also i was wondering if i should refresh the cam chain tensioners as the MC has 30,000 miles on it. Any history of them failing or are they fairly reliable parts? Once again any info is appreciated. Thanks.

Thumbs up Welcome!

Your bike is barely broken in. Mine (a 650) has carried me 72000 miles, and I have never thought about the cam chain tensioners until you mentioned them. I reckon I know the engine's noises well enough by now that my ears would tell me if the tensioners needed service.

I do not know the ways in which the 650 transmission differs from yours, but my transmission functions smoothly and not very quietly. I reckon you should change the oil and filter (unless you know the previous owner had done those chores recently) and lubricate the chain (and perhaps adjust it) and ride a few thousand miles to get to know your fine motorcycle.

If you put some effort into meeting other Stromtroopers, you will probably find the best part of this site. In general, we are cordial and capable enthusiasts, and we will trade lies with you until it is time to ride some more.

I haven't heard of 6th gear clunk

my 1st 2nd shift has always been grindy notchy that I suspect is clutch drag.

you may be into electrical problem rotor etc. at 30K.

Examine rear sprocket for wasted cush hub and bearing

Chance the fuel pump filter is running near end of life and you should do the external fuel filter mod.

Just ride her and routine maintainence.

I agree with above. My Vee has no clunk at overdrive. Most of them shift roughly from 1 to 2. The rest of the shifts are pretty smooth.

My cush drive and rear carrier bearings are fine and original. Fuel filter at 50,000 miles and I used the oem original...not into the filter bypass surgery. No issues with cam chain tensioners. Fairly noisy engine by my standards but at 67,000 miles now and she still sounds the same. Very little oil consumption. Good solid bike. Trust it still for looooong trips.

I am on an 07.

Greetings to the new guy!

Mine is a 2011 and the transmission clunks a little in 1st but overdrive is so quiet that I can barely tell the shift was made. Sometime, I have to tap it twice just to be sure it actually change gears. Of course, now that I changed the primary sprocket to a 14 tooth, I use the overdrive all the time. This is a great bike and you're gonna love it every time you ride. Welcome!

Thanks for all the replies. Chain and sprockets are new and oil filter just changed. I did change the gearing to the 18 front and 42 rear sprockets for highway mileage. I don't recall if the clunk existed prior to this change. Everything is tight. I guess i will just ride her and hope the transmission holds together. Thanks everyone.

18/ 42? wow, how is that going to increase your mileage? you could not use overdrive till about 80MPH with that gearing....

Bring it out to the Vstrom Gathering in Havasu the weekend of April 20-22 and lets compare the shifting to other Vstroms.
I will be on my 650 but know of at least 2 other 1000's coming.

Not even then, I have the same 03 Vee with about 35k on it and it had 17 42 even at 80 6th lugged I went to 16 42 and haven't been happier. 16/43 was just to low for CA freeways.

I would suspect the gearing change is the culprit the engine/ trany in mine made some weird noises and let me know it wasn't happy unless I begin a gear (moving not stopped) at around 3500 to 4000 rpm and I try not to run below about 3500rpm anytime after starting out.

but good luck and let me know if you get out to So Cal sometime.
