Bandit vs. Strom

Aside from some dimension differences, it seems the 07' Bandit and DL1000 might appeal to the same rider. I've been thinking of getting the DL, but now with the Bandit being offered, why not go for that? Is the riding position more forward? What do I get with the lower ground clearance? For everyday cruising around (not getting wild), will the 48 pound difference be noticable? Barring any negotiating, why not save $200 and get the bigger motor?

Been thinking about it myself. I haven't been using the Strom on dirt, so going to a pure street bike like the Bandit 1250 sounds like it might be a plan. Need to see some reviews , though. It's really a new beast with this new engine, and I wonder what the ride impressions and reviews will be like.

I own a wee and test rode a '05 Bandit 1200.

They are completely different bikes! And I do not mean now things relating to their powerplants as the wee is not so strong.

DL-ups
easier handling in slower speeds
comfortable suspension for my taste
much comfortable seating position
more leg room
load capacity, rack
better mpg

Bandit-ups
more stabile at higher speeds
smooth engine
more "sporty" suspension
better in twisties
better brakes

No idea about the new K7 Bandit.

The Bandit will not have the relaxed riding position of the Strom.

The footpegs are back and up in relationship to where they are on the Strom.

It is a much different powerband. The Strom produces power down low, the Bandit on the upper end.

Which is better, only you can decided that.

I owned a 1st gen Bandit and I prefer the Strom to it.

The Strom is more comfortable than the Bandit was and I believe that the Strom handles much better, it seems to turn in much easier. The Bandit needed a good push to get you around corners. The headlight on the 1st gen Bandit sucked.....really sucked compared to the Strom. It really is a "night and day" type of difference. The Stroms gas tank is bigger as well though it gets worse fuel milage than the Bandit.

The Bandit pulled far harder than the Strom, no contest there. I would classify the acceleration of the Bandit as violent. It pulled hard from 4500 on up, there are hardly any bikes that can take a Bandit on a top gear roll on. I walked away from a Z1000 from 80kph all the way to 200kph. The Strom just does not compare in the speed category.

Tha Bandit now seems like it was more of a "point and shoot" bike whereas the Strom keeps me comfortable and is better for the longer rides that I go on. I miss the get up and go though, nothing like passing people on the double yellow with the Bandit.

It all depends on what its intended use is and what you want out of it. The Strom is the more relaxed and versatile. The Bandito is that, El Bandito, outlaw, speed and more speed.

I also had a first generation Bandit 1200, but sold it because it was too much fun, :wink: if you know what I mean.

As a rider who just sold off an '01 bandit, I take issue with fl_strom's statement. The Bandit is all about low-end and mid-range torque... just because it looks a sportbike, doesn't mean it revs high like one. The riding position, while not as neutral as the V, is very close, footpegs included.

The real kicker for me between the 2 is weight... Even with the redesign for the '07, the new Bandit is still very much a parts bin bike, including its all-steel frame. I rode the west coast on my '01 last summer, from Astoria, OR to LA, CA and the massive weight of the bandit was an issue on that trip.... I'm not noticing it so much on the Wee; it's got an aluminum frame

If you are going to ride primarily on the street, I'd say the Bandit warrants a hard look. I'd like to ride one.

I'm very sorry you take exception with my statements. They are not a put down of the Bandit, I like the Bandit myself. I was simply trying to give my opinion of what I know about both bikes. I have ridden a Bandit 1200. I was making a choice between it and the ZRX1200 - which I later bought over the Bandit.

Never said the Bandit was like a sporbike, but it is the prototypical UJM inline 4 cylinder engine, which we all know makes it's horsepower as the rpms come up. I think the dyno chart from a 2001 Bandit will attest to that.





All that I was trying to do was give a contrast between the both bikes. If I've stepped over the line, please let me know.

I had a 2nd generation 1200s.....IT HAD SERIOUS LOW END GRUNT, and would scare the crap out of you from 5000 RPM and up! It is not your typical inline 4, where the bottom end is not very torquey. I also describe the power delivery above 5k as abrupt. :shock: The new 1250 is the same good ole Bandit, but it also IS NOT. No they are not as comfortable as the Stroms, yes they lean forward more, yes the rear sets are back more...but they are pretty comfy believe it or not. They are the biggest "sleeper bike" in motorcycling IMHO. Now with an even bigger engine, YOU WILL put some skid marks in your pants!!!!! :lol: Are they as versatile, no they are not. Are they a fantastic streetbike YES!!!!!! Do I miss my old Bandit a little bit....YES!!!!! :wink:
