V-Strom question about exhaust heat

Hello !

I have started to look for a new bike (should buy this automn or early in the spring). I currently own a Suzuki Bandit 600 1997, I have made alot of mileage on that bike, but I want something stronger more reliable and more confortable for my next trip (summer 2007). I am planning to go from Montreal -> Vancouver -> L.A. - Las Vegas and back home !

I have many choice for my new bike :
V-Strom 1000
Yamaha FJR 1300
Honda ST 1300
BMW R1200 GS

I am, of course talking about the V-Strom right now ! I have 2 concerns about this bike, may be you will be able to help me :


1) Biggest concern : Exhaust Heat for the passenger ! We will be riding for long hours and for many miles. I would like to know how hot are the pipes getting for the passenger after a LONG run. Please, before anwsering, take a moment and ask you wife/gf/passenger. Since we all love our bike we all want to see it perfect ... but maybe its not; and your passenger is not complaining ;o)

I know that the pipe are not under the seat like many sports bike ! But on these bike, the passenger seat become really hot, not to burn yourself, but too hot to be willing to ride for a month on that thing. On the VStrom they are lower than that, but still higher than all my other options.


2) Minor : Chain drive, I have a chain on my Bandit and I need to oil it every day ! So I guess I would need to do the same during the trip. I guess there is no solution to this one, but its a concern anyway !

Hi there, my wife rides pillion all the time and there is no problem with heat coming up from the exhausts, in fact in cold weather it will probably make it more comfortable for her.

At a stand still in traffic I probably get more heat from the engine than she does from the exhaust.

When I got my bike I had a scottoiler fitted so that I do not have to worry about oiling the chain.

I live in the province of Granada in Spain....and this Summer we've had regular temperatures around 40. In fact, one day we got a 44. Bloody hot!
I just asked the wife if she had experienced any heat from the exhaust pipes on this, or our previous Strom, and she just looked at me if I was an idiot! :lol:
So that's a NO! :lol:

For long trips only, I don't think anything could be better than the Honda ST, short of a Goldwing. But you pay a lot for either.

For year-round riding and versatility, short trips, long trips, errands - get the V-Strom.

Anybody ever check out BamaRider.com? One of the best web sites there is!

No heat problem on either the 650 or the 1K. What you see on the 1K exhaust is actually the heat shielding around the mufflers. If you do decide to ride in sandals you'll notice heat off of the front cylinder exhaust manifold blows all over your right toes.

You shouldn't have to oil a chain everyday unless you're driving in really harsh conditions. If you're really worried buy one of the automatic chain oilers like a Scott Oiler or something similar. Otherwise just bring a can of lube along and clean and spray at the end of every other day.[/quote]

I have never heard of oiling a chain every day. I suppose it would' t? I oil mine very several hundred miles, whether they need it or not. new chains last pretty well.

PS. I'd get the Strom over the GS if money is an issue, at half the price it damn near as good (if money isn't an issue, quit worrying about lubing the chain ever).

I once rode the Strom 1000 very hard for around 200k (mostly keeping ahead of some arsehole in a V8 ute who thought riding right up my arse at 160kmh and trying to overtake me on blind corners was fun). So I flattened it through some twisties left him behind and to make sure kept going. I hadn't ridden that fast since my CBR.

Anyway to the point of all this; when I got home and just out of curiosity I put my hand flat against the exhaust shields and they were only mildly warm to the touch.

FWIW, zero issues w/exhaust heat. Re chain, I just today put on a new chain after 25,000mi (w/lots of life left). I lube my chain on average every 500-1k mi and it takes less than 60 seconds to do so.

Also, FWIW, a friend of mine has had a combination of all 4 bikes that you listed above in his garage over the past year. The one w/the highest miles is the Strom if that tells you anything.

As far as reliabilty, I doubt anyone can report running their Strom harder than I have mine... in 39k miles (and in 35wks of ownership) the bike has been ROCK SOLID. No emergency/non-scheduled issues whatsoever. Good luck w/your decision and w/your trip.
