Funny Story

I like to occasionally let my 10 year old or my 7 year old go for short rides around the neighborhood (High's for a quart of milk, deliver them to a friend's house, etc). They are always required to wear ATGATT. So, being educated as they are, my wife (another rider) was taking them somewhere in the Volkswagen Jetta the other (very hot) day when she spies a very large, muscular black man on a sport bike wearing helmet, shorts, T-shirt, and sandals.

"Boys", my wife states, "Is that man wearing the proper gear to be riding a motorcycle?"

"No Mom, he's not!" states my 7 year old, with my 10 year old nodding his agreement.

As she passes the motorcyclist in traffic, my boys start yelling "Squid!!! Squid!!!" out the window.

My wife said she has never been more grateful for electric window lifts and convenient off-ramps than at that moment. :P

EXCELLENT!!

Man, I haven't been to a Highs in years, I didn't know they were still around, gladd to see they are. I suppose they only exist in Md?

Great memories of rides to it for a Snickers bar with my Grand-Pa in his Charger. Man had a thing for musclecars  still does.

Ride safe, ride well, ride protected.

No, not really funny at all.
Sounds like white suburban racist paranoia.
If I'm wrong, nevermind.

If you remove the word "black" would it be funnier? If so, maybe "black" wasn't the point at all. Maybe the point was the kids called someone intimidating something that potentially could anger him.

At any rate, I can remove the word "white" from your post and I'm still offended.

Kids learn QUICKLY about what we say and do.

I don't think race had anything to do with it, and I don't think her reaction would have been any diffrent if it had been a huge guy with tatoos all over him, or just a huge guy.

Some people just want to create a problem where there is no problem.

Huh. If he had been a "very large, muscular white guy on a Harley", would anyone have cried racism? Do you know my race, or just assume I'm a "paranoid white suburban racist"?

The main point was that he was a big, intimidating guy. He could have been Jewish-Chinese-Native American with pink hair for all I care. I'm sorry if anyone misconstrued the inclusion of the rider's race in the description.

What I was trying to imply was the uncertainty my wife felt towards this gentleman when she was retelling the story to me. The guy was intimidating to her, so I should have left it at that and kept his race out of it. Again, sorry if I offended anyone, but geez, loosen up a bit.

P.S - (It was about what kid's will repeat, if you didn't get it).

Hey guys, we are all friends here, remember that. I was brought up with some pretty bad racial ideas but learned to get over them and accept folks as they are. The guy was a squid plain and simple.
